One of the most important skills that an effective leader must possess is the ability to delegate and to do so with forethought. Whether you’re managing people within a corporate setting, or delegating as an entrepreneur to a virtual assistant, your lack of clarity in expectations will likely result in disappointing results. 1. Define the requirements and provide them in writing. In other words, have you provided a clear picture of what a successful outcome will look like? Why is this important to the business? What are the key components of the task? Who and what might be a resource to assist in the task? What and when will follow up be expected?
2. Identify opportunities for skills-building and personal enrichment. We exist in a W.I.F.M (What’s In It For Me) culture and often this mindset goes beyond a desire for financial compensation. When delegating tasks, identify and explore the possibilities in which the task may enrich the team member’s skill set. The best results will likely come from participants who feel they are being encouraged to grow and expand their knowledge as a result of their involvement in a collaborative effort.
3. Discuss the requirements. Discuss verbally, what already exists in writing. To ensure that you’ve covered all bases, be certain to include words such as who, what, when, where, why and how during your discussion.
