It’s the 21st century, society still runs on ideologies that can be dated to beginning of time. For instance, the Protestant religion that began around 16th century in England still managed to hold a solid foundation in the constitution of the United States in the 21st century. Its ideologies lead to the creation of many theories on the aspect of juvenile delinquency. For instance, early theories reason for punishing was to quell evil in the individuals, this led to witch hunting and torture for those accused of crime. While these extreme punishments were mostly done to adults, children were usually accused of being possessed and received intense punishment under the church. Because of the protestant religion, many religious based theories are still rooted in society when it comes to crime and punishment. The latest acts of deterrence such as juvenile prison and spending a day in an adult prison is ineffective and unhuman to juveniles. In t.v. shows such as Scared Straight, the children are forcible shown the harsh conditions in prison to prove a point that jail is bad but later on the children still end up getting into trouble and sent to jail. Which shows how ineffective the show is but every time a new set of children are introduced and most at the end has a worse behavior than before. In the terms of juvenile prison for the children, instead of showing them the positive aspect of society to better themselves. One wrong move, can land a child in solitary confinement and at such young ages the children develop mental disorders that makes them more prone to break rules. For adults it can be understandable of such punishment but for an underdeveloped juvenile these punishments are too severe.
