Overall, I found this film very surprising. I never realized how many Native American achievements that have been overlooked in today’s society. Native Americans have done so much to affect the formation of today’s country that it is astonishing. They have made so many contributions that I had never realized prior to this film. I thought that some of the most important contributions were irrigation techniques and medical procedures. Religion also played a vital role in shaping America today. Native Americans literally were involved in the development of nearly all aspects of America including sports and food. This film is an important one because it shines light on the long forgotten Native Americans. They made contributions in architecture, fishing, schools, industry materials, and government to name a few. I enjoyed the film because it is a celebration of Native Americans cultural contributions. I never realized how much has been overlooked. The film is also effective in disproving countless stereotypes that depict the typical Native American as some sort of savage warrior who is illiterate and misinformed. This could not be more far from the truth and must be corrected. Most of these stereotypes have been shaped by Hollywood television. It’s important to eliminate these stereotypes of Native Americans. Today, I believe that when most people think of an Indian they think of a crazy half naked man screaming through the forest with bows and arrows. This is contrary to the truth that many Indian societies were incredibly civilized and organized. This occurred in many different ways many of which have been incorporated into American life today. In the end, this film was very effective in shining light upon the issue. I think it’s great that this video has become so widespread and I hope that this trend will continue. That way, more people can understand the issue at hand. I cannot believe that some individuals can be so naïve and that…
During Colonial America, features of democratic and undemocratic was a work in progress for democracy.…
Colonial America played a major role in the way America is run today. In this particular time period, America was just beginning to be its own country. Now that America was finally free from British rule it needed a government of its own. Democracy seemed to be the best option for the new government, but it was a little hard to switch to all things democratic immediately. Democracy was a work in progress in colonial America with democratic and undemocratic features.…
It was gritty, dark, with bribery, corruption, and fouled campaigns, right to the point by reveling how dark our politics are in the United States. Today, we still see our own Illinois politicians who resemble Senator Paine, who compromises his ethics in order to accomplish some greater good that also brings great profits to him and friends. Yet, for every politician that lied or went to jail the next one comes in with the promise to shake things up. Failed promises to make big changes and yet they succumb to the same bureaucracy as many of our politicians do. However, lets not forget about oil lobbyists who keep alternative fuels from being pursued, or how tobacco lobbyists push to keep the truth about addiction from the public, and of course the corruption of our pharmaceutical industry, and our politicians who took monetary gifts for personal advancement. Therefore, have we learned anything from “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington” or have we pocketed the conversations it for now? With an election every few years someone new comes along to make us think changes are coming and the media plays a strong role in our citizens views. How else would Donald Trump be staying in his top rankings this elections, is it his honesty, his own financial backing, or perhaps the younger generation actually know who is running for a change since they grew up with him on…
In my opinion, I though the film was powerful and overwhelming at times. As, the public figures and political activists gave a lot of information. Analyzing the film, you see how America’s complex prison system affects people of color. It is shocking. Because despite living in a country that gives liberty to all…

This paper will discuss George Washington and how he would perceive our government and the politics of today. He undoubtedly would have some qualms about some of the developments that occurred within his country. Even though, he would be unhappy about some things overall I think he would be more pleased than anything else. Unfortunately, he would be disenthralled that the two party system did develop. From my understanding of this man he really did not appreciate partisan politics. The person who should run the country should be the best and most qualified for the job. It really shouldn’t have mattered what their political philosophy was. With that being said, even if were disappointed with the political evolution I’m not entirely sure he…
To know that he was capable of moving and getting through all the setbacks that arise makes me feel like I’m capable of enduring any challenges in life. For him to constantly get rejected even by his family shows how strong of an individual he is. It seem like he went through everything that you could go through to create a successful movement from the strikes to the grape boycott to the fast that he endured for 25 days. For someone with the health that he already have last 25 days without food really shows what someone is capable of doing when there mind is set on the goal. The film overall taught me a lot about the Mexican culture and the things that they went through throughout their history in California. I now have a different perspective on farm workers and what it takes to be able survive such horrific circumstances. The presentation made me feel as if I don’t know as much as I should know about history for every race and class throughout our history. This occurred not that long ago and is still an issue in the United States today. We see numerous people working for starvation wages that cannot improve the circumstance that their almost stuck in. It inspired make a change within the area that live and make sure everyone has their rights to the basic necessities of life. It also offended me that we as a nation could treat a group…
The thirteen colonies in America began early to develop democratic features. The British traditions and principles stilled lived within a few of the colonist. Accountability, equality, individual human rights are democratic principles. Democracy in colonial America was a work in progress with democratic and undemocratic features.…
* In April 1802 Jefferson urged Minister Livingston to attempt the purchase of New Orleans and Florida or, as an alternative, to buy a tract of land near the mouth of the Mississippi River where a new port could be constructed…
According to Johnson, between 1815 and 1850, the United States astoundingly experienced a period of extraordinary expansion. Despite the “catastrophic bank crash of 1819” (Johnson, pg. 285), the free-market economy was growing, the government was finally able to develop an official model public education system, the birth of universities nationwide had proved advantageous to literacy rates, and the official establishment of political parties pronounced Americans as “the most enlightened in the world” (Johnson, pg. 293-298, 392). However, considering both Zinn and Johnson’s interpretations, this era was characterized as one of unashamed divisiveness and exclusion.…
As the King of Great Britain issued charters, more and more people began to arrive the colonies in hopes to escape religious persecution and find new job opportunities in the New World. It did not take a long time for colonies to form and eventually have their own government as more people settled. However, early British colonies were not democratic in their practice because not everyone was given a voice. For example, Africans had no representation in the government because they were considered property rather than humans. In addition, the colonies remained faithful to their kings, which shows that not everyone is equal.…
evil. There are also elements of nationalistic pride, honor, duty, honesty, patriotism, and sincerity. The story plot depicts a man who is selected by powerful and corrupt men to become senator because he is naïve, unsuspecting, and seems to be easily run over. He accepts the opportunity, though confused as to why he is the best candidate, to become senator, and hence becomes an unlikely hero. Jefferson Smith represents the naive ness that is so treasured in children and untainted, sincere hearts, and something that we all would like to claim we are- honest and sincere. Clarissa Saunders, a staff person who worked for the former Senator of Kansas and then for Smith when he was appointed, represents those who have been exposed too long to the scandals, the lies and the heart-aches of the “real-world” and she has been calloused to the society in which she lives, finding it entertaining at first, to watch those who are naïve, such as Senator Smith, suffer humiliation, and there is the idea that she too was once herself, bright-eyed and an idealist. There is also the unlikely hero portrayed in the “Junior Senator” whom everyone in the Senate has jeers at when he stands his ground and there are distance shots of him as he slowly fades in health and stamina as he tries to filibuster the Senate by talking non-stop until the Senators relinquish their efforts to build the damn or time to consider the bill…
This movie also gave out a great deal of information about the Civil Rights struggle in Birmingham. It did a wonderful job of laying out the facts and and events leading up to the church bombing. Unfortunately, it took their deaths to act as the wakeup call to America concerning the racism and Civil Rights movement in the south. The scenes with George Wallace are outrageous, considering that his segregationist policies, in a way, led to the deaths of the girls. The scene where he introduces a black man that he doesn’t even know, as his “best friend” in a lame attempt at repentance, is pitiful in how pathetic he seems to be in trying to clean up his image, after the fact.…
The government, a republic under democratic ideals, is supposed to represent the people. Yet what is truly being represented, shown in the policies in tax reductions and various other policies, is the rich. Just one of the top 10 most richest people in America have more money than 300 thousand of the lowest people put together. People are so distracted by other things, like racism, the gay marriage laws that were passed, and all these social issues that they don’t see one of the main problems at hand. Because of this “U.S government policies reflect the desires of the wealthy and interest groups more than the average citizen, according to researchers at Princeton University and Northwestern University” (Bondoli 1). Why? A democratic society has the most power in the people as a whole.…
