Specific Purpose: To inform my audience of the steps in measuring blood pressure.
General Purpose: Blood pressure is a vital sign that can be measured by utilizing three important steps.
I. Watch Your Blood Pressure
A. About 1 of 3 U.S. adults—or 67 million people—have high blood pressure. Only about half (47%) of these people have their high blood pressure under control. This common condition increases the risk for heart disease and stroke, 2 of the leading causes of death for Americans.
B. As a health science student, I have acquired this skills early on especially since it runs in my family.
C. Knowing how to do blood pressure measurement could possibly save your life
D. Today I would like to demonstrate these three basic steps: gathering the materials, following a specific procedure, and interpreting the blood pressure reading.
II.
A. The first step is to gather the materials.
1. You will need a sphygmomanometer (blood pressure cuff) with a gauge and a special cuff.
2. You will also need a stethoscope.
B. Next is the specific procedure which can be broken into four steps.
1. The cuff is wrapped around, with the bottom of the cuff just above the antecubital space.
2. The gauge of the cuff is placed to be read easily.
3. The stethoscope diaphragm is placed over the brachial artery.
4. The pump valve is closed and the cuff is inflated, then released slowly to obtain a reading.
C. A blood pressure reading is usually expressed in two figures.
1. The top figure (systolic) is a measure of the pumping action of the heart muscle itself.
2. The bottom figure (diastolic) indicates the ability of the arterial system to accept the blood forced into the system.
3. Normal blood pressure is 120/80 for the ages 18 through 45.
III.
A. So there are three basic steps need to check blood pressure.
1. Gather materials
2. Follow specific procedure
3. Interpret BP reading
B. In conclusion, 63 million people have hypertension. It is estimated that about half of the nation's hypertension go unnoticed. So I encourage you to put forth the extra time and the little effort needed to help yourself live a long, healthy life; watch your blood pressure!
C. Thank you my name is Ajee Wade

The quantitative study uses mostly primary sources in the literature review. This study was published in 1998 with the literature review sources ranging from 1984-1998. Sources used in this review are studies about the proper technique for measuring blood pressure, things that affect blood pressure readings, and suggestions to help prevent symptomatic orthostatic hypotension. The literature review provides a basis for the study because it supports the claims that there is inconsistency about whether feet should be kept flat on the floor while measuring blood pressure, and whether it would skew…

Hypertension or otherwise known as high blood pressure is a term that millions of us are familiar with. According to Center for Disease Control and Prevention “more than 65 million individuals have hypertension” ("High Blood Pressure", 2010). Blood pressure is defined as the force of blood against the artery walls as it circulates through the body. It can cause health problems if it stays high for a long time. It is measured using two numbers. The first, systolic, number represents the pressure in your blood vessels when your heart beats. The second, diastolic, number represents the pressure in your vessels when your heart rests between beats ("High Blood Pressure", 2010). A healthy blood pressure reading is lower than 120/80mmHg and pre-hypertension is between 120/80mm Hg and 139/89mmHg. Stage one hypertension is between 140/90mm Hg and 159/99mm Hg and stage two hypertension is a reading of 160/100mm Hg or higher ("About High Blood Pressure", 2012). High blood pressure raises your risk for heart disease and stroke and is one of leading causes of death in the United States. It is often called the "silent killer" because many people don 't realize they have it and often has no warning signs or symptoms ("High Blood Pressure", 2010). High blood pressure, if left untreated, can cause severe damage to the body 's organs, including the brain, heart, blood vessels, and kidneys. Risk factors for hypertension include: increasing age, male, race (African Americans, Hispanics), diabetes, family history, high sodium diet, obesity, physical inactivity, alcohol, and tobacco use. The goal for treating people with this chronic condition is to decrease mortality and increase quality of life (Wang, MD & Vasan, MD, 2005 ).…

Finding out someone’s blood pressure is very important. Johannes Müller once said, “The discovery of blood pressure was more important than the discovery of blood.” Someone’s blood pressure could be high, and no one would know. The reason being is that a person with high blood pressure, also known as hypertension, will usually have no symptoms. High or low blood pressure cannot be detected without being measured. High blood pressure could cause heart attacks, strokes, or heart failure. Low blood pressure could also cause heart attacks, strokes, or kidney failure.…

Cassie Ho Period 1 Physiology September 16th 2014 Lab 1: Homeostasis Background Information The conditions in our bodies do not really change at all. Our body temperature has to stay within a certain range in order to function. We maintain these function through a process which is called homeostasis. Diastole is the phase of the heart’s cycle where a chamber of the heart, either an atrium or ventricle, relaxes and fills with blood. Also called the relaxation phase. The two top chambers relax and fill with blood. The ventricles are also relaxed and the blood flows from the atrium to the ventricles during this time. While systole is the phase of the heart’s cycle when the ventricles contract to eject blood from within the chamber. The two top chambers contract, followed by ventricular contraction. There are two steps. Within this first step, the atria contract together to push the blood down into the ventricles (diastole). In the second step, the two ventricles contract to force the blood out of the heart (systole). The…

The CDC explains how your blood pressure is checked best, “A health professional wraps an inflatable cuff with a pressure gauge around your arm to squeeze the blood vessels. Then he or she listens to your pulse with a stethoscope while releasing air from the cuff and watching the gauge. The gauge measures blood pressure in millimeters of mercury. Blood pressure is measured using two numbers. The first (systolic) number represents the pressure in your blood vessels when your heart beats.
