The students would begin protesting for political reforms, they wanted democracy. The protesting had won support all throughout the world, soon they were being given support for other nations. The students called for democracy and for Deng Xiaoping to step down. Deng would not step down, he would end up ordering a martial law. After the order had been announced, many of the protesters left, yet some remained. The students that remained continued protesting with their 33-foot statue, which they called the “Goddess of Democracy”. Deng’s 100,000 troops would end up opening fire upon the student protesters.
