Indledning

In this essay I will be discussing the article entitled “Making Roman-Ness and the Aeneid” by Katherine Toll. Toll argues; in her article, that the fundamental background of the Aeneid was the amalgamation of the colossal number of Italians that were enfranchised into Roman citizenship. Toll attempts to prove her argument by emphasizing that Vigil’s motive to write the Aeneid, was to offer a story of unity when it came to the culture and camaraderie of the native Romans and the new Italian citizens, who had until then seen each other as separate communities.…

One of the most impressive examples that Levitt and Dubner brought to attention was the dramatic change made in the ways of childbirth. Just one hundred years ago the mortality rate of childbirth was 1 out of every 10 mothers died during child birth as a result of puerperal fever. While doctors were aware that these women, and many of their newborn babies, were susceptible to contracting the fever and dying they were unsure as to how the fever was being contracted and therefore unable to remedy the situation. Doctor Ignatz Semmelweis made it his mission to determine why these women were dying in such drastically…

Beowulf is a historical and elegiac Anglo-Saxon poem. Religion is an irritable subject and one of the main topics. The heroic character Beowulf is a depiction of superior and God. Grendel is the delineation of the Pagan beliefs as well as the corrupt in the world. This poem is composed of internal and external complications between the Pagan’s and the Christian’s beliefs. Even though Paganism is meticulously extended throughout the text, there are several references about Christianity. Keywords and phrases such as “fate”, “hoping for hell’s support, and many more help the reader understand the different religions that are visible in this poem. The anonymous author of Beowulf thrived with the legendary poem by embracing Paganism, Christianity, and the conflicts of both religions.…

In 1910, a cardiologist by the name of Dr. James B Herrick received a complaint from a patient named Walter Clement Noel about pain. Herrick was uninterested in the case so he assigned it to Dr. Ernest Irons. After taking a blood sample from Noel, Irons noticed “sickle shaped” red blood cells in Noel’s blood. After hearing this news, Herrick became interested in the new disease because he thought he and Irons came across an unknown disease. Later on in 1927, two men by the names Hahn and Gillespie discovered that patients with Sickle Cell Disease could have sickled red blood cells by removing the oxygen. Hahn and Gillespie also took notice when relatives of the patients had sickle cells but no the disease. They concluded that there was a sickle…

The Nordic poem Beowulf transcends ancient pagan civilisation to today’s society, where Beowulf remains a literary archetype through Christian adaptation. The original scop (poet) of Beowulf came from a Nordic pagan society dating back years before Christianity reached that region, however the translated text used today contains a strong Christian theology due to the interpretation of the Irish Catholic translator, Seamus Heaney. The rediscovery of Beowulf through a Christian lens magnifies the eternal human…

    Roman Empire Imperialism

A generation later, when the situation had grown worse and the Goths and Vandals had thrust themselves deeper into the heart of the Empire, the tone has changed, and the priest Salvian, in his De guberatione Dei, declares the ruin of Rome to be judgment of God on a society rotten with vice and corruption. Christians and pagans alike are castigated for their sins: the poor are oppressed, the rich are sunk in sensual pleasure, and ‘the Roman world goes laughing to its death’…

This paper will look at the Christians in the second and third century and how the Graeco-Roman intellectuals attacked Christianity. Furthermore, it will look at the Christian response to these attacks. The problem with the Christians in the Roman Empire was not so much a Roman problem initially as the Romans allowed the Christians to carry out their religious practices in relative peace. However, it would seem that a number of factors had occurred, namely the squabbling between Pagans, Jews, and Christians, and instead of arguing amongst themselves, it spilt out into the Roman Empire. In addition, the intellects were drawn into the argument and then put their own opinions into these arguments, thus de-stabilizing the somewhat peaceful coexistence…
