Dennis Rader: Serial Killer
Rader: '"I put a bag over his head, put a cloth over his head, a t-shirt and a bag, so he could tear a hole in it. And he subsequently died from that. I then went back and Josephine had woke back up... I took her to the basement and eventually hung her."' These words were spoken when he was in court. Serial killers are interesting to people because their minds work so differently. Most serial killers like BTK, H. H. Holmes, and John Wayne Gacy seem like normal people but underneath they are terrors to this country. One of the first serial killers in America was H. H. Holmes. different traps and doorways that lead to nothing. Some door ways would lead to pits full of acid. Once the people were dead he would either put them into a fire in the basement or he would cut open the mattresses and stuff the bodies inside and sew them back up. H. H. Holmes was eventually hung for all the murders he committed (Tribby 8). Because of H. H. Holmes our country named the people that kill a bunch of people, serial killers. Another famous serial killer was John Wayne Gacy. John Wayne Gacy was a U. S. serial killer who was found guilty of killing 33 boys and young men ( John Wayne Gacy Biography). He was a construction worker who would invite the boy to come over to his house to hang out. While they would be at his house he would take pictures of them and use them as child pornography, after that he would rape them and kill them. After they were killed, he would put them in the crawl space of his house. Found guilty almost immediately of committing 33 murders, after a short jury, he instantly became one of the most vicious serial killers of the U. S. (John Wayne Gacy Biography). John Wayne Gacy died from lethal injections. Finally, Dennis Rader is a pretty recent serial killer who lived pretty close to where we live.
Known as the "BTK Killer" - which stands for "bind, torture, kill"- Dennis Rader terrorized the Wichita, Kansas, area from the 1970s to the 90s. ( Dennis Rader Biography). "Rader killed four members of the Otero family in their home - Joseph and Julie Otero and two of their children Josephine and Joseph Jr" (Dennis Rader Biography). "Rader confessed to at least 8 of the 10 murders that people and police say he committed"(Thomas). There was a 10 year gap when he disappeared and didn't kill anyone. "There may have been signs of trouble early on as Los Angeles Time reports stated that he used to hang stray cats as a child"(Dennis Rader Biography). " Rader was a poor student in high school and in college"(Dennis Rader a Biography). The way BTK was caught is because he put a floppy disk into a church computer and the cops tracked the location of the floppy disk and found him in the church. " How he became such a monster is an important case study to prevent others from taking his dark passage" (Dennis Rader Biography). BTK is still alive in the El Dorado Correctional Center serving many life
sentences. Many serial killers just look like normal people because they have normal job and what seems like normal lives. Serial killers like BTK, John Wayne Gacy and H. H. Holmes seemed like normal people but they really are pretty scary people. A fun fact is that you will walk past a murder 36 times in your life. This fact may scare some people but you will never know that you do walk past a murder because they seem like normal people with normal lives, these serial killers that I talked about had normal jobs: hotel manager, construction worker, clown, church worker, they don't seem like they could cause so much fear and heartache.
