Research Question:
To measure the density of water using graphical method.
Introduction:
Water is the most abundant compound on the Earth and it covers about 70% of the Earth’s surface. Water is a transparent fluid which forms the world's streams, lakes, oceans and rain, and is the major constituent of the fluids of living things. What is its density? I chose this experiment because I was really curious about the density of water, is it constant all the time? I doubt that because what I got from internet, PubChem website, it states that the density of water is 999.97kg/m³. I think the density of water is not constant. Therefore, I do this experiment to see if the density of water is constantly at 999.97kg/m³.
The density or more precisely, the volumetric mass density, of a substance is its mass per unit volume. The symbol most often used for density is ρ. The unit of density is kg/m ².
Here is the formulae of density:
Density = Mass (kg) Volume (m ³)
Hypothesis: According to PubChem from the internet, it states that the density of water is 999.97 kg/m³ .
Variables:
Manipulated Variable
Method of controlling
Volume of water
The volume of the water is measured by dropping water into the cylinder. Random error such as parallax error would occur. So I took the measurement three times. 0.00001m³ of water is added to the cylinder each time. . The experiment is conducted for volume of water of 0.00001m³, 0.00002m³, 0.00003m³, 0.00004m³, 0.00005m³, 0.00006m³, 0.00007m³, 0.00008m³, 0.00009m³ and 0.00010m³.
Responding Variable
Method of controlling
Mass of the water
At the start of the experiment, the mass of the measuring cylinder is measured.
0.00001m³ of water is added to the cylinder and the mass of the water is measured by digital balance.
