Dental Hygiene Case Study
I started my journey by interviewing and shadowing dental professionals, most of them USC graduates, and learning about their journeys. Each interview solidified my resolve to become a highly educated dental hygienist. Attending counseling appointments with Mr. Zach Woolfork, information sessions, Fight-On Fridays, open houses, and especially meetings with current students and alumni at USC, I felt reassured that it is the ideal educational setting for me.
USC’s Dental Hygiene program is my top choice because of the superior education, career preparation, and networking offered. I plan to be a proactive member of the unrivaled Trojan family through full participation in educational activities. Through my courses and clinical training, I will

Hayley and I had a good experience at Dr. Mangelson’s office. The staff was extremely friendly and welcoming. While we waited for the doctor to prepare for his surgery, one of the hygienists, Karen, let us into her operatory to observe her scaling a patient’s teeth. She showed us a couple of instruments she loves and gave us some tips on working in private practice. She told us about how she and some other hygienists get together in a “study group” for continuing education. An interesting thing she told us is that Dr. Stanley Malamed was one of her professors at USC so she invited him to Utah to speak to several dentists in the area in two weeks.…

Mr. Doolittle is a resident on floor 5B at Morton Plant Rehab Center. The interview was conducted early in the morning, after breakfast, in his room (501) which he now lives in alone after his roommate, Mr. Johnson, recently passed away from a heart attack. Upon entering the room, I noticed right away Mr. Dootlittle is very neat and orderly; he directed me to sit down in a chair next to him, while he initially kept his eyes down or looking out the…

The Nashville Veterans Affairs (VA) dental clinic was a beneficial learning experience because it was a unique population. The VA is committed to improving the health of Veterans through a comprehensive and high quality system, which focuses on each patient's special needs. This mission was important because each patient I saw was completely different with special needs, but they were all similar in a few behavioral ways. My rotation at the VA clinic was helpful because each patient I saw had different medical conditions. It was interesting to learn that all of the VA records were accessible to all of a patient’s providers in the hospital. This seemed important and helpful in my opinion because everything about that patient’s medical treatments…

In five or so years I hope to be settled into a job as a dental hygienist. Preferably a job in Rutherford county or surrounding areas. I became interested in the career field in high school after speaking to the hygienist at my dentist office. She was extremely supportive and truthful about what to expect out of this career path. I have also completed 40 hours of job shadowing that have also given me information on what to expect. While most of my activities in my youth consisted of mainly sports, they taught me things such as control, patiences and using my intuition that can be utilized in my future career. Some of these things might include when a hygienist needs steady hands to scrap the plaque off of teeth and not damage anything. Another instance would be knowledge of how to properly use the tools for the job. Patiences will come in handy when working with smaller children. For me to be able to do this as a career I must attend a technical school and obtain a degree in dental hygiene. It takes around 2 years to complete the program. I will be attending Wake Tech in Raleigh not only because I enjoy the area, but their program timeline fits best for me. I would like to have steady employment in 10 years and be able to travel the world. A job with flexible hours is very important to me since I desire an active lifestyle. The typical dentist hours allow for this which is a perk of my future job.…

One of the foremost reasons for wanting to attend Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine is by nature of being located in an urban environment; it’s able to offer an outstanding clinical program. I am interested in an institution that exudes tradition, diversity and change all in one and I believe that BU exemplifies all of these qualities. In addition, a metropolitan setting creates a medium for which some of the finest faculty around the city and beyond can come to BU and share their ideas, experience and wisdom to posterity. However, more than just acquiring clinical proficiency, BU requires its students to think deeper and outside the box. Its strong interdisciplinary, world-renowned research program offers students…
