Denzel Valentine
Michigan State senior guard Denzel Valentine didn’t expect to send out a message of farewell to fans over social media this weekend.
He expected to be playing basketball with his Spartan teammates in the Sweet 16 at the United Center in Chicago. He is the national player of the year in many services and his team was rolling so well that he predicted a national championship.
The Spartans tied for second in the Big Ten during the regular season and won the Big Ten tournament with tough games over Purdue and Maryland.
However, the Spartans were knocked off in one of the biggest upsets in college tournament history in the first round by No. 15 seed Middle Tennessee State University that barely made it in the tournament. But a barrage of three-point baskets and 10 offensive rebounds propelled MTSU to a stunning

However, No. 10 Syracuse will face No. 11 Gonzaga in the round of 16, a spot Michigan State expected to be in.
“I just couldn’t believe it,” Valentine told reporters after the loss. “I still can’t believe it. This seems fake. I haven’t wrapped my mind around it yet.”
It was a wonderful weekend of buzzer-beaters and upsets, which makes the NCAA tournament so fun to watch. It is why thousands flock to Las Vegas and pays hundreds of dollars to sit in huge sports books to watch and bet on games.
The opening round of the tournament is the biggest draw for Vegas, even bigger than the Super Bowl.
Despite the huge upsets, many of the usual suspects in college basketball will square off in the Sweet 16.
Number four Duke faces top-seeded Oregon in the West regional. All four top seeds remain in the tournament and the ACC, traditionally the best basketball conference in the land has six teams remaining.
Those teams are happy and eager to push for a national title. In East Lansing, fans and players are still stunned by one of the biggest upsets in tournament history. It will take a long time for this program to

“Tie in” meaning each conference has a BCS bowl game that the conference champion gets to play in. Competitive Balance is an important thing in college football. Competitive balance is defined as a predictor of demand for sporting events and leagues (Dittmore). “Spectators would be less inclined to purchase tickets to an event whose outcome was almost certain. As a result, sport leagues and governing bodies often take measures to ensure a level of competitive balance exists within their leagues or bodies”(Dittmore). Regular season games in all of the other division 1 college sports do not attract the amount of people week-to-week or day-to-day due to very little of leeway. This leeway being referred to is the ability for a team to lose a game, or even two, and still make a run at the National Championship because of the playoff system. This makes the regular season games less important than in college football. Fan base is vitally important; the revenue gained every Saturday remains substantial despite the unhappiness with the BCS. Fans knowing every game every week is do or die for their teams. If a playoff system is implicated, the ticket sales on a regular season Saturday game will be detrimental and simply…

After the 2003 season, the BCS had to modify the rules about how teams were being ranked after there was a split Championship title because three different BCS conference teams had one loss a piece and only two spots available for the championship game. This was a rule that the BCS officials wanted to rule out but, never got to it until after the 2003 season. The rules included strength of schedule, quality wins, and fan poll. After the 2003 season the BCS changed the rules eliminating team record, and quality wins from the equation, which gives the fan opinion more power. Currently, the new system gives the media poll, coaches’ poll, and the combination of the computer rankings to count for one third of a team’s BCS ranking and the human polls are now two thirds of the BCS ranking. There are six major BCS conferences; Big Ten, Pac-10, ACC, Big East, Big 12 and SEC whose champions have automatic bids in the BCS games. Seeing that these are the strongest conferences with the most popular teams in the nation, why not? They produce extremely high revenues every year and have some of the most elite athletes in the nation. The BCS is a profit motivated system that creates bowl games for under privileged teams to earn financial success for the year even though the bowl game is not considered, “the big game”. Businesses in the cities of an impact region arrange an economic impact in the weeks leading up to the game in order to boost sales. Bowl games are advertised weeks in advance hoping to rouse up a little fan support in short periods of time. Cities in each bowl sponsored game prepare hotels, traveling, and restaurants creating large revenue for their economy. The significance of the Economic impact as a whole is to raise public awareness of the importance of the sport industry and gives the idea to legislative support of a financial investment to determine if it is a worthwhile…

It would not be much of a stretch to say that being a Mizzou Tiger runs in my blood. I grew up getting plenty of exposure to Mizzou from my grandmother, a diehard Tigers fan that attends almost every home basketball game, my mother, who is herself a Mizzou alumnus, as well as my older cousins who both graduated from Mizzou, giving the University a constant presence in my life. Then, as I reached high school I received additional exposure to the University as a result of it hosting the state tournaments for Speech and Debate, Science Olympiad, and basketball throughout my four years, however I truly fell in love with Mizzou when I came to visit for a Scholar’s Day event the summer before my senior year. Seeing the campus in the heart of summer,…
