Cabinet members not only provide advice to the president in situations regarding national security welfare, but they also are the successors to the presidency in case the president is compromised in some way. The U.S. Cabinet is made up of departments such as State, Justice, Housing and Urban Development, Health and Human Services, and Homeland Security. These cabinet members advise the president on everything from educational policies to terrorist threats to the conservation of national resources to foreign affairs. In addition to their advisory duties, Cabinet members lead their respective departments, creating policies that guide each unit and managing programs that each department controls.

mission is to create strong, sustainable, inclusive communities and quality affordable homes for all. It also drives down deficits and maintains their progress through smart savings from health care, immigration, and tax reforms. The budget funds their greatest challenges including tackling climate change and find new treatments for devastating diseases not only for the year ahead, but for decades to come. The Department of Housing and Urban Development is an agency that oversees federal programs designed to help Americans with their housing needs. The Department of Housing and Urban Development seeks to increase homeownership, support community development and increase access to affordable housing free from discrimination. There are about 8,000 employees in this department and they have initiated programs that have leveled the playing field for Americans, and programs that are ending homelessness. The Department of Justice budget totals $29.0 billion. The budget is spent on law enforcement litigation, prisons and detention, administration, and grants . Led by the Attorney General Loretta E. Lynch, the Department of Justice is comprised of approximately 40 components that have a broad array of national security, law enforcement, and criminal justice system responsibilities. Department of Justice prosecutes federal law offenders and represents the U.S. Government in court; its attorneys represent the rights and interests of the American people and enforce federal criminal and civil laws, including antitrust, civil rights, and environmental. The Department of Justice also provides grants and training to state and local law enforcement. The Department of Justice holds 118,110 positions. The staffing level is comprised of: Agents (20%); Attorneys (8%); Correctional Officers (18%); Intelligence Analysts (4%); and Other (50%). “Other” captures analysts, administrative, clerical, information technology specialists, legal services, and security specialists. The Justice Department just released a comprehensive report that provides an overview of the Civil Rights Division’s police reform. The report, is designed to serve as a resource for local law enforcement agencies and communities by making the division’s police reform work more accessible and transparent. It examines a range of topics, including the history and purpose, negotiation of reform agreements, and community-police trust. The Civil Rights Division has opened 25 investigations into law enforcement agencies and is currently enforcing 19 agreements, including 14 consent decrees and one post-judgment order.

The Department of Homeland Security maintains protection on our borders from the illegal movement of weapons, drugs, and people, while promoting lawful entry and exit. This is essential to homeland security, because American citizenship speaks to our character as a welcoming country that gives us the rights and freedoms guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution. The State Department efforts to prevent and counter threats to civilian security, such as violent extremism, mass and weak governance and the rule of law. The bureaus and offices reporting to the Under Secretary advance the security of the American people by assisting countries around the world to build more democratic, secure, stable, and just societies. A few bureaus are Conflict and Stabilization Operations, Counterterrorism and Countering Violent Extremism, and the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor. The department has been in the news recently saying that they cannot afford to wait for an act of nuclear terrorism before working together to collectively improve our nuclear security culture, share our best practices, and raise our standards for nuclear security.

Agencies create regulations under the authority of Congress to help government carry out public policy. The Department of Health and Human Services has 11 operating divisions, including eight agencies in the U.S. Public Health Service and three human services agencies which total up to 79,540 employees. These divisions administer a wide variety of health and human services and conduct life-saving research for the nation, protecting and serving all Americans. The Office of the Secretary consists of, the chief policy officer and general manager, administers and oversees the organization, its programs, and its activities. The Department of Health and Human Services has been in the news recently because it announced the selection of eight states for participation in a two-year Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic demonstration program designed to improve behavioral health services in their communities. This demonstration is part of a comprehensive effort to integrate behavioral health with physical health care, increase consistent use of evidence-based practices, and improve access to high quality care for people with mental and substance use disorders.
The Department of Homeland Security’s Unity of Effort initiative aims to make the Department greater than the sum of its parts. DHS is an interconnected organization whose different pieces fit together in the pursuit of a common mission: protect the homeland. In support of the mission of making the United States the greatest nation in the world. Not only do departments have to work hard to benefit the government, they must work together to benefit the society as a whole to protect Americans. All the Departments have the same goal, which is to help America prosper, so they all work together to strive for the goal. An example of how they all work together is when the U.S. Departments of Housing and Urban Development and Education are joined forces to improve education in literacy in the youth. Although all of the departments have special tasks and responsibilities all of them combined create an unstoppable nation prepared to challenge any task in its way.
