Definition
Most common long-term condition formerly known as asthenic personality disorder is characterized by a pervasive psychological dependence on other people. Clients who have been diagnosed with Dependent Personality disorder depend on other people to meet their emotional and physical needs, with only a minority achieving normal levels of independence.
Cause
The cause for Dependent Personality Disorder is unknown but usually begins in childhood.
Contributing Factors More common in females; early history of chronic medical conditions or separation anxiety disorder.

Nursing Interventions
1. Assess the client’s immediate environment, possessions, and hospital room for potentially dangerous objects. Rationale: client’s safety is a priority.
2. Treat self-mutilating acts in a matter-of-fact manner. Rationale: the more attention a client receives for these behaviors, the more likely the client is to repeat the behaviors.
3. Give the client positive feedback when he or she is able to express anger verbally in a nondestructive way. Rationale: positive feedback can give the client confidence and incentive to continue the positive behavior.
4. Teach the client social skills, such as approaching another person for an interaction. Rationale: the client may lack social skills and confidence in social interactions.
5. Encourage the client to take direct action to meet personal needs. Rationale: the client needs to learn independent living skills.
