An oil refinery is located on the north bank of a straight river that is 2 km wide. A pipeline is to be constructed from the refinery to storage tanks located on the south bank of the river 6 km east of the refinery. The cost of laying pipe is $200,000 per km over land to a point P on the north bank and $400,000 per km under the river to the tanks. To minimize the cost of the pipeline, how far from the refinery should P be located? (Round your answer to two decimal places.)…

The item was made for a Prince Saif al-Dunya wa’l-Din ibn Muhammad al-Mawardi, it is both decorative and functional as an incense burner. The item represents Zoomorphic incense burner, which was popular during the Seljuq period. This lion-shaped example is exceptional for its monumental scale, the refinement of its engraved ornament, and the wealth of information provided by the Arabic calligraphic bands inscribed on its body.1 The lion-shaped item stands upright in an almost bowing position, with both ears pointed upward and tongue sticking out slightly in front of the teeth.…

Question 1 A stock is currently priced at $20. In any given 4-month period, stock price will either go up by 18.91% or down by 15.9%.1 The riskless rate of interest is 4% per annum continuously compounded. A European-style call option is written on this stock with a $12 strike price and 8 months to expiry. a) b) c) d) Use the delta-hedging approach to price this call option. Use the risk-neutral valuation method to price this call option. Work recursively back through the Binomial tree, calculating the call option price at each node. Check that the option price at each node matches that calculated in part a. Again use the risk-neutral method to value this call option, but this time do not work back recursively. Rather, focus on the terminal distribution of stock price (and the number of paths which lead to each terminal stock price). Assume a European-style put option is written on this stock. It has 8 months to expiry and a $25 strike price. Focusing on the terminal distribution of stock price, value this put option.…

    Calculus of Variation

4.1 INTRODUCTION Calculus of variations deals with certain kinds of “external problems” in which expressions involving integrals are optimized (maximized or minimized). Euler and Lagrange in the 18th century laid the foundations, with the classical problems of determining a closed curve in the plane enclosing maximum area subject to fixed length and the brachistochrone problem of determining the path between two points in minimum time. The present day problems include the maximization of the entropy integral in third law of thermodynamics, minimization of potential and kinetic energies integral in Hamilton’s principle in mechanics, the minimization of energy integral in the problems in elastic behaviour of beams, plates and shells. Thus calculus of variations deals with the study of extrema of “functionals”. Functional: A real valued function f whose domain is the set of real functions {y(x)} is known as a functional (or functional of a single independent variable). Thus the domain of definition of a functional is a set of admissible functions. In ordinary functions the values of the independent variables are numbers. Whereas with functionals, the values of the independent variables are functions. Example: The length L of a curve, c whose equation is y = f (x), passing through two given points A(x1 , y1 ) and B(x2 , y2 ) is given by…

The primary objective of line graphs is to define raw data, making it easily understandable with a visual representation. By plotting data on a line graph, you assign it a vertical and horizontal value that corresponds to the raw data determining the graph. For instance, if tracking annual sales at a retail store, the data would be defined by the amount of sales in dollars and the months during which these sales took place.…
