There are several reasons that I chose Evelyn glennie to talk about, but the main reason is music. I have been in band for 6 years now and choir for 3. Between marching band, concert band, and pep band it is a big part of my life. All of my family loves music too. My mom played percussion, my dad piano and guitar, my sister clarinet, and my brother french horn. All five of us are in/directing a choir also.
Evelyn glennie, born on July 19, 1965, is one of the world's foremost percussionists. She wasn't born deaf but at a young age of only eight years, she had started complaining of earaches and hearing loss. The doctors later told them it was because of nerve damage. on her hearing aids, but soon she stopped using them because she found them distracting. That year, she watched as a girl, one of her classmates, played the drums. She new right then, that was what she wanted to do. Not long after that she began taking lessons. In 1985 she graduated with honors from London's prestigious Royal Academy of Music.
It means alot to me to know that someone cared enough about music that they would work so hard for it.
Even after 6 years playing for band at my school I still make many mistakes but I learn quickly and can fix it for the next time I play it. I can't imagine not being able to hear while I play my instrument. The band director at my school, Mr. Aikens, always says “you need to listen louder than you play”. This means that even if you know the notes and rhythms you can't play good without listening to your section and the band as a …show more content…
whole.
Evelyn glennie, although she couldn't help it, did exactly what he said to do, only in a slightly different way than most people would think. She has told people that she identifies notes by vibrations she feels through her feet, head, and body. I guess it works too, because she has accomplished so many things.
She became the world's first full-time solo classical percussionist. She is the first person person in history to successfully create and keep a full-time career as a solo percussionist. She works by performing worldwide with some of the greatest conductors, orchestras, and artists. She is now -- years old and has more than 200 pieces made specifically for her from many of the world’s most famous composers. She has received over 80 international awards over here whole lifetime.
Evelyn glennie’s story inspires me for many reasons.
One reason is because it reminds me of a romance. I read novels much more than most people do, but it's not just any kind of book that I read. Nearly 90% of the books that I read are romance. Learning about the story of Evelyn glennie and her love for percussion is not like reading another boring biography, it's more like reading a romance novel
Think of it like Romeo and Juliet. They were not supposed to be together. They were told that they couldn't be together, but they didn't care. They did everything they could to be together even if it was seen as impossible. That's what Evelyn glennie did because of her love for music, or more specifically percussion
Another reason that it inspired me was the amount of work she put in to get what she wanted. Although she didn't grow up in a particularly musical environment, She did start piano lessons when she was eight, but she could still hear at that time.
One day she saw a classmate playing percussion instruments. Her interest was roused, and she asked for lessons. After a few days, Evelyn said that it just "felt right" for her. By the age of 12, when she was almost completely deaf, she began working with percussion
instruments.
The first ten years of her career as a solo percussionist was filled with many milestones. Some of those include, the first performance of a new percussion concerto, the first time an orchestra had performed with a solo percussionist, and the first solo percussion performance at a festival or venue. Although those things were a big deal in her life there were many things that showed how much work she put in. some of these includes the albums that she created, and receiving over 80 international awards.
So there are several reasons that I chose Evelyn glennie to talk about. The hard work she did and her love for music are two things that really made me drawn to learn more about her. She has done so many things that most people would think are impossible despite her condition. She is a role model to many people in the world and I admire her for everything she has done and will continue to do throughout her lifetime.
