Teaching Assistant Diploma Course

Assignment one

1, Describe how you might contribute to a lesson given to a group of seven year old childen learning to play percussion instruments.
The role of a teaching assistant is to maximise learning, create a safe and positive learning environment and to minimise behaviour problems. I would contribute to the lesson by trying to achieve this goal in the following way:

Locate a suitable area within the school where the class can use the instruments without disturbing other pupils

Locate the necessary instruments and sheet music, make sure they are in safe working order and won’t cause injury when used. Report any breakages to the teacher.

Set up an area within the room, ensuring that I am not blocking any fire exits. Also clear away any existing blockages.

Prepare any displays, etc that could be needed showing the difference between percussion, brass, woodwind. Or how drums have been used by the army for marching, or how rowers use the beat of a drum for timing.

Split the instruments into their different groups – drum, triangle, and tambourine.

Gain a basic working knowledge of each instrument, so I am equipped to supervise the children in how they work and how to hold the various pieces.

Be a good role model for the children in demonstration of equipment.

Clean up the working area when the class has finished, check the instruments over for any breakages and put them away for future use.

Observe the class and be ready to offer any help to pupils who are struggling.

Observe and monitor the pupils’ behaviour and ensure they are paying attention and minimise any disruptive behaviour

Be ready to offer any feed back to the teacher at the end of class.

2, What might your role be in organising, using and maintaining the learning resources, material and equipment for this percussion lesson?
As a teaching assistant I would assist in the preparation of the resources, ensuring that all the

Effective professional school leadership is a common phrase tossed around as the country is focusing on improving school districts in our nation. Although student learning is the concern and responsibility of everyone, I believe with effective professional leadership this will trickle down to all the stakeholders involved.
