At this point, Samuel was on a divine assignment to anoint the next king of Israel. When Samuel arranged a feast for Jesse’s family, he saw the very tall and stalwart eldest son, Eliab and said, “Surely the Lord's anointed is before him. But the Lord said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart” (I Samuel 16:6-7).
There are two very good lessons that we learn here. Operating in spiritual gifts is never an end in itself. It’s a means to an end. Samuel went into Bethlehem with a word of wisdom that the new king was among Jesse’s sons, and that he was to anoint him so. Without a clue about which son was God’s chosen, Samuel used his natural eyes and beheld the commanding appearance of Eliab and thought certainly he was the next king.
