It is now the eighty-fifth day, and Santiago decides to take his boat to a different location. He takes the boat way out deep in the Gulf Stream. There he is able to discover good waters. In these waters he catches and hooks a marlin that is so incredibly big that he is unable to reel it in. The marlin is so strong that as it tries to swim away it is pulling Santiago and his boat away.
Santiago continues to struggles with the marlin. He has been wrestling with
it for two days and he has begun to admire the giant marlin during this time period. He has grown tired and has several injuries from the fish. Then, Santiago is able to harpoon and attach the fish to the side of his boat on the third day. This fish is the largest one that he has ever seen and he knows it will bring in a huge profit.
On the journey back, some sharks start to surround his ship. Santiago manages to fight off several of the sharks, but by the time he returns to the harbor the treasured marlin is eaten and all that remains are bones. Manolin cares for the saddened Santiago and cheers him up by promising to fish with him again.
