Watson and Crick have been given credit for discovering the three dimensional, double helix model of DNA. They got the idea for the double helix shape from a woman named Rosalind Franklin, who saw the double helix shape from a picture she took of an x-ray. Frederick Griffith discovered that bacteria can change form and function through transformation. Bacteriophages are a form of a bacterial virus. Viruses act as parasites and can cause many different diseases. Erwin Chargaff figured out that units of cytosine equaled the number of guanine units, and that the number of thymine units were equal to adenine. Telomerase is an enzyme that adds the end of telomeres to the DNA in germ cells. A nucleoid is the place in bacterium where DNA is found. Nucleoids are not encompassed by a membrane. Chromatin is located in chromosomes and it contains RNA, DNA, and different proteins. Heterochromatin is DNA that is in very tightly bound irregular clumps. Euchromatin is decondensed regions of DNA. Nucleic acid hybridization is when single stranded DNA or RNA interact, so hybrids are formed. Genetic engineering is when genes are manipulated for different purposes. Plasmids are small, circle-shaped molecules of DNA. Recombinant DNA are molecules of DNA that are made by genetic recombination. This occurs in laboratories. Gene cloning is when more than one copy of the same gene is made. Restriction enzymes cut DNA at a specific nucleotide sequence, known as a restriction site. Restriction sites are places where DNA has specific nucleotide sequences. A restriction fragment is a fragment from a DNA strand that is cut by an enzyme. Gel electrophoresis a used to separate and analyze DNA and RNA and the fragments they have. Sticky end is a single stranded end and the sticky end can make hydrogen bond base

At the California Institute of Technology, Linus Pauling, one of the best physical chemists at that time, proposed his first DNA model, which was based more on common sense rather than mathematical reasoning [Judson, 1986].
