The deafening sound of mortars engulfed me but it wasn’t loud enough to hide away shrieks of men, yelling and shouting. The ringing sound echoed in my ear getting louder and louder by the second. “We are under attack!” The screams of thousands of men drilled into my ears. We all scurried through the trenches like vulnerable mice seeking for shelter.

Some of my comrades marched asleep, others limped with one boot. We were all blind. Behind us a small shell silently slammed onto the ground. Slowly a thin tendril of smoke stalked into the sky above us. “Gas!” I screamed. In an instance men started yelling, other stumbled to the ground. The green sea slowly started to engulf thousands of men. Some choked whilst other drowned. All plunged at me but I left and ran. They stared at me with hanging faces and writhing white eyes and blood came gargling from their froth corrupted lungs. Even the posturing giants dissolved in the drifts of smoke. When the gas finally vanished, all that I saw was the place rotting with dead. All I saw was bodies sprawling and grovelling in the mud like trodden sand
