Descriptive Essay: Color Guard

Walking on the fields, stands packed with people, waiting to see you perform. “They came for you, not the football team,” we would always joke knowing that our competitions always filled the stands faster than the football games. That, while everyone on those friday nights were going to get their popcorn and hot dogs, we were just practicing for the next day, where no one would dare move from their seats, because, no one wanted to miss a second of the performance. This is color guard. This is me.

Color guard has transformed me, and pushed me closer to the woman I want to become. I’ve learned to have a voice for myself, because we shout our counts as loud as we can in the hopes that, if we shout loud enough, maybe our toss will land perfectly.
