Harriet Beecher Stowe (1811-1896) was a novelist and an American abolitionist who is responsible for writing Uncle Tom's Cabin, some people might say the most influential books in the history of America. Her father and her brother were pastors of the Congregational Church in Litchfield. After one of her children had died, it made her contemplate the pain slaves had to face when their family members were sold and taken away, and that’s when she decided to write Uncle Tom’s Cabin. In 1852 when she published her first book, she became known nationally, and went on to write several more books on the same topic of slavery. Uncle Tom’s Cabin sold 500,000 copies in the first 4 years. This book brought about the controversy of the harsh reality…
It is difficult to relate personally to the narratives covered in "Slavery and Freedom", especially during this time of year when we are reminded to give thanks for all that we hold dear. It is unimaginable to think about the life of slaves such as Frederick Douglass and Harriet Jacobs. Their sense of family was cut off at birth or shortly after, forming a personal identity was impossible and gaining freedom required huge acts of courage.…
It was 1946, Black Forest, Germany. Hitler was driving his car to the dark forest cabin. He was talking with his second in command Julius Schreck.…
In David Reynolds’s “Mightier than the Sword: Uncle Tom’s Cabin and the Battle for America”, a detailed monograph supports the ethical background of Harriet Beecher Stowe’s controversial novel, “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” while analyzing its importance in American History. The notorious Bancroft Prize-winning author depicts Stowe’s literature influence on the abolitionist movement, the American Civil War, and inspiration projected onto racial discussion still to this day. His intent was more to honor Stowe, in her accomplishments with altering American history like no other work. Born into a big family with a minster as a father, Harriet Beecher Stowe was raised under a Calvinistic household. This theological background maintained a strong influence throughout her work.…
The place I feel content at is Ruth lake this is because it is fun when it is warm and when you have a boat because you get to go tubing. Sometimes you might see your friends there and get to do things with them. There is also deer season in the fall and that means I get to go camping. You can also go onto the mountains and have a view of the shining water of the lake.…
Up in the mountain tops, just past Payson and just before Strawberry, lies my home away from home. It’s the good old, “Olson family cabin.” Sitting at approximately 5300 feet elevation it is naturally 20 degrees cooler than Phoenix. Which is great because you don't melt in the summer like you do down in the valley. It is not your typical log cabin. Rather, it is a small house with a large loft, almost as big as the house. It is surrounded by tall, rich green pine trees, and for that reason my family has dubbed it the “cabin.” It has beautiful, hand crafted, wooden deck that surrounds the entire outside of the house where we lie to barbecue and just hang out.…
I was a camp counselor at Camp Wabikon ‒ a co-ed overnight summer camp located in Temagami, Ontario for children who are 6-15 years of age. Along with teaching Red Cross swimming and lifesaving and Tennis, I was my cabin's 'parent' for six weeks. Therefore, I was present with the children at all times. In essence, I was the leader of my cabin's the physical, social and mental development. The main things I learned were the importance of time management and organization , as I had to plan lessons for swimming and Tennis while taking care of my cabin; conflict resolution between campers; and the ability to plan and foresee events (I had to plan camp-wide events and activities for all campers).…
Giant flags of red, white, and blue, children shouting in parades, spinning noise-makers, streamers, and centerpieces: sounds like the perfect birthday celebration! But, the Fourth of July is more than just the nation's birthday. It is the countless number of friends and family, the perfect weather, the backyard barbeques, and the brilliant fireworks that light up the night sky. No other holiday makes people feel the same as they do on the Fourth of July.…
On July 4th 2009, we had a family reunion in Port Saint Lucie, Florida for all of us to celebrate together as a family. We went to the downtown fourth of July celebration fair the city had put on. Hundreds of people gathered around and held picnics together and the children had their face painted red white and blue. When it reached night, the city shot off a huge firework display, you could hear the shouts and excitement coming from hundreds of patriotic Americans. The feel of every around created a buzz of excitement and a feeling of proudness came over me to be proud to call myself and American. One other important fourth of July celebration memory I have is on July 4th 2012, spent with my aunt, uncle, and cousins. What made it so special is because of my uncle, he is a now retired Marine Corps Sergeant. He just like other men and women in the United States history fight for the right of American freedom, risking their lives to uphold the American promise. This fourth of July, we spent the day out on an island picnicking and celebrating this glorious day. Once nightfall set upon us we boated out into the middle of the ocean and sat together huddled in blankets watching the huge firework display from inland. The fourth of July in my family is a day worth celebrating, the day American’s gained our freedom. We celebrate it every single year in different ways from picking at the beach, fairs, firework displays, and family reunions, but no matter what ways we celebrate it for the reason for why it was established in the first…
It’s also an offence for anyone that isn’t a firework professional to possess professional display fireworks too and as a result, the police now have the power to issue fixed penalties to those caught in violation of such laws. For those holding events or even their own private fireworks parties, you should also be aware that it’s illegal to set any fireworks off between the hours of 11pm and 7am. The only exception to this rule is on that all-important day itself (5th November) when firework displays may continue until midnight. On New Years Eve, Diwali and Chinese New Year, displays can continue until the wee hour of…
After the few hours at the barbeque every relative of ours packed some chairs and water bottles and we all headed to the one of many celebration sites. We arrived a little bit earlier to get a good seats and view around the lake where the appointed people will demonstrate a beautiful selection of fireworks, when it got dark and all the people got around they announced to lay back and watch the sky lights up with all kind of colors and bright lights, along with the song of the national anthem of America roaring in the area, after the demonstration I said to my parents: " thank you for this night, it was the most exciting 4th of July celebration I have ever been to."…
In the happy little town of Bradberry, everything was absolutely normal; except for old man Jenkins’s house. There was a story in the town, that Thomas Jenkins had gone mad in the house and killed his wife and children on October thirty-first, 1981. It is still believed that Jenkins lives in the house all alone, consequently, everyone avoids the house, only going near it if it is absolutely necessary. However, there was a game between the children of the town and it happened every year on Halloween night. They would try to see who could get the closest to the house and they counted this as a test of each other’s bravery. The “bravest” of the children would be the most favored person in school come the next school day, however, no one had ever actually infiltrated the house. This Halloween would be different, and everyone could feel it in the cold…
The cabin sits on 5th Crow Wing Lake a series of 11 interconnected lakes. They bought the cabin many years ago as a summer place. It had no running water or an indoor bathroom, a water pump sits in front of the cabin and to use the bathroom you go to the outhouse or “biffy” as it’s known. Electricity comes from a gas generator and is warmed by a wood burning stove. One wall is a garage door that can be raised to let the breeze in. The room with the stove is the size of a two car garage and the back half has beds and a loft with four mattresses on the floor to sleep on also or wrestle. It had enough head room to stand upright if you were a kid, or if you were an adult you had to bend over to walk in there. It sits about 50 feet from the edge of the lake with a dock that extends out into the lake, perfect for sitting with your feet in the water. The cabin had a screened in front porch with chairs, table, and a ratty comfy couch I spent many a night playing cards at the table or curled up on that old couch reading anything I could get my hands on. My Grandpa built a small motor boat when he was younger and it always sat at the dock ready for us to use to fish or explore the lily pad covered channels that connect the lakes. It wasn’t a speed boat by any means but…
Is there anything better than a good holiday? From the scary Halloween to the crazy April Fool’s Day, holidays are always an excuse to have fun! However, the Fourth of July is the my favorite holiday, because there is always good food to eat, because we spend time with family, and especially because we watch colorful fireworks. First of all, my mom cooks the best food on the Fourth of July. We always have spicy, sweet barbequed ribs or chicken. My sister’s yearly request is golden corn on the cob dripping with butter. My dad must have creamy potato salad. However, my favorite item comes at the end of the meal—juicy, red watermelon. The Fourth of July meal is fantastic, and so is sharing it with family.…
My grandparent’s home was located in this little town named San Joaquin. The house was a little white house with a brown trim. This house has been around since my grandparents emigrated from Mexico, and my mother was only thirteen years old. When I say small, I mean the house was really small. This house contains one bedroom, a bathroom, kitchen, and a living room. The thing that it had was a nice front and back yard but they were also small. In the back yard my grandpa had it filled with different types of plants and crops. He had corn, chilies, tomatoes, and different sorts of things. The back of the house looked like a jungle. And he also had a chicken house and a dog that was solid black named Spike. This is also where my grandparents’ raise their ten kids. When we would visit everybody would sleep in the living room, in the bedroom, or just where you fitted but that never seem to be a problem.…
