There are 3 energy systems the body uses to create ATP. They are the ATP-PC system, the lactic acid system and the Aerobic energy system. Both the ATP-PC and lactic acid systems are anaerobic and therefore do not use oxygen, and the aerobic system does use oxygen. When we begin to exercise the first system we would use to create ATP is the ATP-PC system. This system acts by creating ATP from phosphocreatine, making use specificially of the phosphate molecule.…
Sammy does not have to wait so long as three girls walk into A&P store with nothing but bathing suit. Now Sammy and almost every men in store are looking at the girls as if they were like something more than just girls. The girls, like Sammy are young and wants excitements in their life, the girl’s bathing suit give the girls a chance to show off their youth. The three girls are also coming of age and their action gives society how they want people to feel about them. Their Bathing suit plays big part of the story since their bathing suit makes them look different from the other people and the girls are just expressing their individuality through their attire. When Sammy describe the girls’ bathing suit in lively colors like “green two-piece”…
Upon the girl’s entry, he describes their physical appearances in extensive detail. The “chunky one with a good tan”, the “tall one with black hair that hadn't quite frizzed right”, and the “queen” with the “long white prima donna legs” and bathing suit straps “looped loose around the cool tops of her arms”. From the amount of detail he used to describe the girls, I deducted that this was a distracting sight to him, along with the rest of the store’s customers who stared at them in disbelief.…
More specifically Sammy finds himself analyzing these three girls who walk into the supermarket one day in their bathing suits. Now keep in mind this story took place in 1961 so it was not very appropriate to be walking around a supermarket in nothing but a bathing suit. Sammy was intrigued by watching and analyzing the behaviors of these girls; as was another clerk, Stokesie. As Sammy said, “you never know for sure how girls’ minds work” (260). As the story goes on Sammy tries to analyze what is really going on in each of these girls’ minds. Such as he had decided that this one in the dirty-pink-beige bathing suit was the “queen”. As Sammy says, “She was the queen. She didn’t look around, not this queen, she just walked straight on slowly, on these long white prima-donna legs” (260).…
Today’s cultural standards play a major role in how people see us, especially in young female teens. Two women, authors Pamela Abbott and Francesca Sapsford wrote, “Clothing the Young Female Body” and argue that the fashion industry and the media are imperative to how a young female chooses their clothes. Abbott and Sapsford Begin their argument by first giving reader’s examples of where young teens are influenced, they state that advertisements and media paint pictures in teens mind on how they should dress and look like. Throughout the article they provide readers quotes from experts and give us an even bigger insight on how teen females…
As the story continues, Sammy curiously watches the provocative young ladies as they stroll through the store looking for groceries. In this fictional story, Sammy describes all three noticeable ladies, the main girl, "Queenie" he describes her as the leader of the two other girls. The second young lady he described was the chunky one; he fully described the chunky girl from head to toe, because Sammy had more descriptive words regarding her appearance. The third girl was the taller of the two. She was not as striking as the other two young ladies. The girls were barefoot and wore bathing suits, which is why they caught Sammy's attention. The reason being not because of the bathing suits they were wearing, but the way they strolled down the isles with confidence as they walked through the store. These young ladies were, "The kind of girls that other girls think are "Striking" and "Attractive." (48) Updike wants to let the reader know these girls wanted attention and only attention; by the way he described what they were wearing and how they flaunted themselves.…
Not all readers would have the understanding of a male teenager’s point of view. Those who would have the knowledge of a male mind still may not recall how it feels to observe situations as a teenager would. Rather than giving the reader the views from every character, we are strictly held to how Sammy is observing each situation which then allows the reader to feel and think more like a male teenager would. Or at the very least understand it better. The descriptions the main character uses make his thoughts and conclusion to the story even more believable. “There was this chunky one, with the two-piece—it was bright green and the seams on the bra were sill sharp and her belly was still pretty pale so I guessed she just got it (the suit)—there was this one, with one of those chubby berry-faces, the lips all bunched together under her nose, this one, and a tall one, with black hair that hadn’t quite frizzed right, and one of these sunburns right across under the eyes, and a chin that was too long—you know, the kind of girl other girls think is very “striking” and “attractive” but never quite makes it, as they very well know, which is why they like her so much—and then the third one, that wasn’t quite so tall” (Clugston, 2010.Ch. 8 pg.73).…
As previously stated, I entered the front lobby to observe teens in an environment where they casually wait and pass by. Upon first arrival there was only one teenager there. He was sitting in a single chair completely alone. As far as I could tell, there were no other people he was there with. He wore very plain clothes, nothing stylish. He sat looking very apathetic. He was overweight and showed signs of a low self-esteem by his posture and head motions (he stared at the floor constantly instead of making eye contact). As there always is in spring, many chick flicks were playing. The first one let out and I took note of all the young girls who came out. All of the females who were not with any adults traveled in groups of at least three. The smaller groups (three to four people in capacity) were very likely to have members who looked very much alike. However, the larger groups were more diverse, yet they dressed much more alike. Those who were accompanied by adults had long skirts on (knee length) which are strikingly contrasted by groups with just teens (shorts far too…
While I was observing, I noticed a lot of the same things that I noticed during my first observation at the water park. There were lots of young girls who were dressed provocatively and they seemed to be desperate for attention. I learned that either parents don’t mind their daughters dressing this way, or the girls changed after they left home. I wanted to give the girls the benefit of the doubt during my observation at the water park because they were at the beach on vacation, after all. But there is no excuse to dress this way in public. There were many young girls that I wanted to offer to buy them some new clothes!…
I was exposed to Crossfit while I was stationed at Ramstein AB, Germany. Most people take a look at a posted workout or video, of elite Crossfit athletes and get intimidated or scared. They shouldn’t! The workouts that get posted to these sites are made for the more advanced, elite athletes. Crossfit is a new idea and like all new things, you either love it or you hate it. However, Crossfit brings something new to the table which is why many believe it is the better way of life and physical fitness. First, we will look at who started Crossfit and what it means. Then I will describe what the community is and lastly we will talk about competitions.…
Nationalism is the ideology of others when they view their group. The sense of nationalism can vary between the different personalities of society. Examples of this are people who are patriotic meaning that they freely express their loyalty and pride about their group to the rest of the population. Some certain individuals can express a different perspective and can be shown to lack interest and are unmotivated about their nation. The sources that I will be explaining show different views of nationalism and the various ways they believe an ideal nation should interact and operate.…
I sat cross-legged on the blotchy carpet, splattered with an abstract painting. My elbow rested on the dent in my knee. My fingers touched the fluffy texture beneath me, tracing the scattered shapes. Beside me, Jenny sat with her legs unfolded, her body was leant back, making her amber hair droop across her shoulders, with her arms propping herself up. Her skin contrasted with the dark orange carpet; her eyes fluttered around the room, where a group of girls sat in chairs filing their perfect walnut nails whilst discussing what colour and shade would most compliment their skin tone. Another group of girls were intensely debating what the latest trend in school would be. The perks of going to an all girls school included how knowledgeable you become by updates you received about the ‘necessities’ of fashion.…
The short story “A&P” exemplifies the way humans observe the female body. In this piece three girls come to shop at a grocery store wearing nothing but bathing suits. The narrator illustrates an image of each the girls, portraying everything from the bone structure in their faces, to their skin tone, tan lines, and the way they walk. Additionally, the narrator describes the older women in the store; denoting their varicose veins, and rugged faces. The human body attracts a lot of attention, consequently, not all of that attention is presented as praise. As a matter of fact, I feel that the narrator was criticizing the girls bodies rather than approving them. In the end of the story, the manager of the store refuses to serve the…
“When you smoke herb, it reveals yourself to you,” is a famous quote of the pothead and marvelous musician Bob Marley. He felt as though marijuana helped tune in with your inner being. I believe cannabis that cannabis does this too and therefore have become a habitual marijuana consumer. Being in tune with ones inner being is important, yet not the reason that I smoke cannabis. The cannabis plant is beautiful, from the leaf to the buds you smoke. I love the ‘highs’ from smoking marijuana, and last but not least, I love how I can function while ‘high’. The summary is that little nuggets of joy have been crucial in making me who I am now, and I am grateful for everything marijuana has brought.…
Last Christmas, I spent 5 fun-filled days and 4 magical nights in Disneyland. Daily weather in Anaheim was beautiful. The driveway leading to the park entrance was lined with tall palm trees as they stretched to the heavens in the blazing sunshine.…
