Review of Tokyo Police Club’s album Champ – Sarah McKenzie skmck2@monash.edu.au

Tokyo Police Club’s new album Champ is pretty damn adorable. I put it on in the car during a rare burst of winter sunlight a few weeks ago and for a few seconds I actually believed it was summer. This is the Ontario band’s second full length album, following Elephant Shell in 2008. Lead singer David Monks is only 23 but has produced an incredibly nostalgic album where he describes moments as if they were a lifetime ago, not a few years.
For anyone who hasn’t heard much of this four-piece Canadian band I would highly recommend them. The song ‘Tessellate’ from their first album is one of the loveliest songs I have ever heard, with a youthful outlook on the world and lyrics far beyond their age. David Monks’ voice never fails to make me a bit weak at the knees. As well as this they are highly capable of producing catchy, dance around like a frenzied monkey, tracks.
The new album is about secrets, growing up, growing apart, double knots, Christmas Cards, favourite foods, favourite colours and finding your way. The only criticism I can give is that sometimes the lyrics seem too “teenager”, especially for your Monash educated ears. However sometimes it’s nice to reminisce on those moments before everyone cut loose on Schoolies.
I think Champ will cement their place as one of the most interesting bands to watch at the moment. The album is out September for Australia, and in the words of one highly astute YouTube user, “the man has a voice tuned for a women’s vagina”.

Though this album has a somewhat new sound and all new music, it very much captures the essence of their older albums, including Crash, showing the beautiful and influential songs that the group has been writing and producing for the last twenty-one years. One new song featured in the interview, “Gaucho” is about “[fighting] for what we believe in” among other important ideas. Other songs such as “Sweet” are written about less pressing issues that remain just as influential. As time has gone on, things have changed for the group, and that…

“Marvel Studios delivers the ultimate comic-book film “The Avengers”, which ties together such characters as Iron Man which was played by Robert Downey Jr., Captain America who was played by Chris Evans, The Hulk played by Mark Ruffalo, and Thor who was played by Chris Hemsworth for a big-screen franchise team-up like no other. Taking center stage this time is Nick Fury played once again by the note-perfect Samuel L. Jackson, leader of the peacekeeping agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D. Fury, along with former Russian spy Black Widow played by Scarlett Johansson, recruits a super team to combat Thor 's ever-deceptive brother Loki which was played by Tom Hiddleston after he brainwashes ace archer Hawkeye played by Jeremy Renner while stealing a cosmic cube from an underground base. Thus the heroes must learn to work together alongside outlaw scientist Bruce Banner also known as “The Hulk” as I stated before was played by Mark Ruffalo, who can track down the artifact 's gamma signals when he 's not hulking out into a giant green monster” (“Marvel’s the avengers”, 2013).…

On Friday, April 22nd, I attended Sympathetic Vibrations’ spring showcase at LeCraw Auditorium in Georgia Institute of Technology, because Caleb Wikle, a dear friend of mine is in Sympathetic Vibrations and he wanted me to go see him perform. Plus, I thought it would be interesting to watch them perform, because it was the first time I have ever attended a college choir performance, let alone, another choral performance other than my own. Sympathetic Vibrations is an all-male a cappella group founded in 1997 by James Clawson and usually holds an average of twelve to fifteen people. During this concert, they covered different songs such as Death of a Bachelor by Panic! At The Disco, Sorry by Justin Bieber, and My Love by Justin Timberlake. For…

The person whom I admire the most is Ronnie Radke. Pioneer in the music industry, a Hercules in the world of philosophy, and pristine with his manor. As the rhythm keeps changing so do the scales that follow the next note, the tempo in which Ronnie tunes too has been consistent since the day he vocalized his art into our ears. Ronnie is the lead singer in a band known as “Falling In Reverse”, which developed over a period of time after trial and error from his prior band known as “Escape The Fate”. The contrast that follows Ronnie towards his vast success is how he got to the top. His music really conveys a slice of his mind into the listener’s; by using western and Eastern philosophy accompanied by very habitable melodies. Ronnie has gone through a series of disillusions that have given him the eccentric feel when he performs.…
