Designer Babies Playing God
If a parent had a chance to make his or her baby “perfect”, should he or she take the opportunity? The term “designer baby” means that people can choose what characteristics they want in their baby. For example, appearance, intelligence, and personality. Some people think that designer babies would start a “superior race” or that his or her child would be born “perfect”. Designer babies are morally and ethically wrong, it is playing God, it is dangerous, and people would take it to far.
“Playing God” is referred to people that act like God. They are narcissistic and feel like they are superior over others. They put themselves in a position that was only meant for God. In Psalm 139: 13-16 it says “For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast
covered me in my mother’s womb. I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvelous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well. My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them.” We are designed in Gods image and we are made imperfect. Scientists now play God and manipulate the DNA of an innocent child.
The process of making a designer baby can be potentially dangerous. During this process, the geneticists could terminate the embryo and damage the gene pool. If the child was killed it could have been prevented by having the kid the way they were supposed to be. This does not only threaten the life of the child but it could also threaten the life of the mother.
Many people are greedy in this world. Some say that changing the DNA of a child to prevent them from having diseases would be a good thing, but once you give that power to make decisions like how tall or what color eyes the child could have people would take advantage and go to the extremes. The parents would be designing their baby like it was a personalized bag.
Many people disagree and say that designer babies are the right way to go. They say that designer babies would start a master race and it is the only solution to advancing our future. Some also say you can prevent disease. God puts some kind of struggle in everyone’s life and maybe that is what God wanted theirs to be. He created us for this world, and not for technology.
