Designer Babies Theoretical Analysis

This article, Designer Babies, is said to be written by the Future of Human Evolution Team so some, but not all collaborators include Bradley LaChance, the executive director of the Center for Evolutionary Technologies where he researches human advancement through technological advancements. Also, Norell Hadzimichalis, who has a PhD in molecular biology and has done postdoctoral research in neuroscience labs. Her experience and education is very helpful in writing this article. In the article, both sides of the argument are presented through problems and benefits with the technology and the role it has in society is explained. First of all, the problem of what to do with the failed embryos arises. Some people believe simply discarding them is an action too similar to abortion and therefore the process of genetically engineering embryos is not ethical, but a person’s opinion ultimately determines if they are pro-choice or pro-life.
The other main point stated was that the technology to engineer genes is costly and will create a gap in society: those that can afford the technology and those that cannot.
This type of minority would be greater than income or skin color, it would be on a genetic level. The group of authors work for an organization whose mission is to discover ways to use technology to our benefit thus they most likely are biased toward genetically engineering embryos. With this mind however, the authors present both sides fairly equally on each issue which helps to neutralize the bias. The intended audience for this article is most likely students who are looking to find what designer babies are and the benefits and consequences associated with them. This article is related to SFC Today because both sources address that a gap in society will emerge if this technology is used to pick traits for children. I am trying to find how designer babies will impact the future; as such, this text explains how society entirely could be
harmed.
