Suddenly one day Armand had a “strange, an awful change” in his manner and he “absented himself from home” At this point in time, Desiree did not know why Armand completely changed. Chopin says, “The very spirit of Satan seemed suddenly to take hold of him in his dealings with the slaves. Desiree was miserable enough to die.” This makes a direct comparison to Cinderella by without Cinderella’s prince and when Desiree did not have Armand, they were depressed. After finally coming home Armand says to Desiree,““It means,” he answered lightly, “that the child is not white; it means that you are not white”” (Chopin 3). During this time era, being of mixed races was frowned upon and unacceptable. This caused Armand great rage and told Desiree she needs to leave with her child. This directly relates to Beauty and The Beast because within both story lines, there is a hardship that the two people who are in love face. Ultimately, this proves that within a fairy tale a complication must
