I. DESTINATION ANALYSIS
1. Transportation
La Union is accessible by air and land. It has a domestic airport (San Fernando Airport) and an international seaport that can accommodate all types of vessels such as Cruise Ships (MV Calypso, MV Astor), Roll-On, Roll-Off (RORO) Vessel, Motor Tanker, Barges, Cargo Vessels, Motor Tugboat, Passenger Vessel to Batanes Island and Fishing Boats (Motor Banca).
To get to La Union by air, take a flight from Manila to San Fernando via Zest Airways. But there are currently no scheduled flights to/from San Fernando Airport. If one wants to fly to San Fernando Airport, it is possible to charter an international or domestic flight.
To get to La Union by land, air conditioned bus firms (Dominion Bus Lines, Philippine Rabbit, Partas, Fariñas, Maria de Leon, RCJ, Candon Bus Lines and Viron) depart from terminals in Manila every hour. Destinations can either be La Union, Narvacan, Vigan, Laoag or Abra. The City of San Fernando lies 273 km. from Manila, which is about 5 hours by land or 30 minutes by air, and is about an hour drive from Baguio City.
By private vehicle, from Manila, take the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) going north, then the Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX). Exit at the last point of SCTEX in Tarlac then take the MacArthur Highway from there on, going to La-union. The estimated travel time is 4-5 hours.
To get around La Union, one can take jeepneys and mini buses with fixed routes at a minimal fare. Tricycles are commonly used to get to the remote areas and suburbs. Jeepneys take passengers to other municipalities and cities in La Union. Tricycles are widely available around the province.
