Details of the student challenge/opportunity – scope, extent, difficulties
From section 1, it is clear that first year students in third level education face huge changes during the transition from living at home to complete independence in all aspects of their lives. Facing the big bad world on your own can be daunting for most and presents many challenges. Having spent the previous year as the most senior class in school, they arrive in an alien environment at the bottom of the ladder.
Macalester College highlight the most significant challenges:

One service which particularly stands out is the ‘The Student Connect Mentoring Programme’ which provides a friendly introduction to NUI Galway for first year students. Existing volunteer students are tasked with ensuring the smooth integration of incoming First Years into university life.
Clubs and societies help students make new friends and have fun while also taking part in physical exercise.
The on-campus accommodation ‘Corrib Village’ also provides cooking classes during the first few weeks of orientation.

UCD provides a student desk to provide students with constant support during their transition and the rest of their college lives.
