Deterioration Of Materials Case Study
Deterioration occurs because of some factors that give an impact to the archival materials. The factors are divided into two groups which is inherent factor and external factor. Compare to external factor, inherent factor is the biggest responsible for deterioration of archival materials. According to M.C. Onwubiko, the main factor in inherent factor is acidity that contain in the paper itself or from the atmosphere. The major causes of deterioration of paper materials in acidity. At the earlier century there is papyrus before wood-pulp was discovered. The lignins that contain in the wood pulp cause paper weaken and discolour. There are some types of inherent factor that causes deterioration. The first factor is acids from the equipment. Archives used different types of shelves to store which is wood and metal shelves. They do not know that by using wood equipment can lead to damage the materials. Boxes also are commonly use in archives to store valuable newspaper, letter or maps. The choice of boxes is important because if it not suitable it can damage the materials.
The next factor is from air pollutants. Air pollutants criteria contain of three which is sulfur oxides, nitrogen oxides and ozone that can arise in form of indoor pollution. Some of those criteria can be control by installed system to remove it and some only can be

Temperature is level of heat and cold of environment. Archival materials are very sensitive with a high temperature where it can affected the lifespan and dry out adhesive on paper. The temperatures of archival materials are different where the audio-visual materials are requiring very low temperature compare to paper materials. If the temperature is high it encourages the growth of fungus. The ideal temperature to keep records is not above

When a city expands, more houses and buildings are built to meet the demands of new residents and business that are moving into a location. In order to construct new building, heavy vehicles are needed to clear land and begin construction. These heavy vehicles emit CO2 into the atmosphere. CO2 is a greenhouse gas which is part of the greenhouse effect that causes Global Warming. The greenhouse effect is the process by which absorption and emission of infrared radiation by gases in the atmosphere warm a planet 's lower atmosphere and surface ("Global Warming", 2013). In addition, new buildings cause indoor pollutants that are released through air vents, open doors, and open windows. These pollutants include formaldehyde (H2CO) from carpet and plywood, as well as, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from paint and…

There are many factors determining which artifacts survive and which are destroyed. Objects made from bone, wood, and leather, are more susceptible to deterioration and rarely last for thousands of years. Stone and ceramic artifacts, on the contrary, are very durable. Relatively few artifacts survive over long periods of time. Usually, only durable artifacts, those made of stone, bone, pottery, or metals, survive. Artifacts made of wood, leather, or other fragile materials rarely remain. As a result, archaeologists have an incomplete view of the past. Very dry climates in desert regions may preserve normally perishable objects. The heat and the absence of moisture prevent decay. Organic material normally decays in more temperate regions, but some may be preserved in lakes and rivers under layers of silt and in water-logged peat bogs and marshes. Very cold climates provide perfect conditions for the preservation of organic material, where the climate acts as a refrigerator. Composition of the soil is also an important factor, as the chemicals of a plant or an animal may react with minerals in the soil and prevent decay. Natural disasters can also take their toll on evidence, such as floods, earthquakes and volcanoes. The actions of people are one of the most significant factors in determining which artifacts survive. Warfare and conflict can be very destructive where valuable items, if not destroyed, are looted or lost. Modernisation of cities has no time for ancient ruins, and many old buildings are torn down to make way for new…

The appearance of mold on archival materials is a prevalent problem for libraries and museums alike. Unfortunately, it is an often overlooked problem, because it is seen as typical for older materials or it goes unrecognized altogether. The fact that mold is preventable, although not always easily so, should encourage those who want to protect documents to ensure the environment they are held in are unsuitable for mold growth. Mold often needs a trained eye in order to be properly detected. It can be mistaken as age spots on materials and thought to be a natural process that comes with age. Knowing what causes mold and the steps to take to prevent mold from germinating will protect archival…
