Geoffrey Parker describes the military revolution as a period between 1500-1750 when changes in tactics, army size, and fortifications transformed the way wars were fought and how they were won1. Fortresses were very useful strongholds until cannons became more developed and knocked the fortresses down. Changes in the design of fortresses then made them more successful against bombardment. Firearms on the battlefield slowly became more present until it became the sole dominant choice of weapon in combat. The size of armies during this period drastically increased, partly because of the need to surround a castle during a siege. The army size of nearly every western power more than doubled during this time…

The main aim of the paper is to compare and contrast how the stock market and the Banks promote economic growth and it provides a critique of their functions in transitional economies. Every country depends on its economy for its growth. For a country to be stable, its economy has to be stable. Banks and stock market contribute to a great extent to the economic growth of every country where it provides firms with opportunity to get funds thus encouraging more investment from the firms. At the same time they give information on the ways resources should be allocated. The development of a financially sound, market-oriented banking system is always considered to be fundamental to a flourishing transition. Arguably, it is important to macroeconomic stability and to positive long-term growth prospects. As documented, bank intermediation in transition economies continues to be stunted after a decade or addition of reform, mainly where advancement in banking reforms is inadequate. The banking system profitability still stands to be unimpressive, after the effect of inflation on valid profitability is taken into account.…

In our macro analysis of Bangkok we discovered that Political unrest in Thailand does not pose a threat to foreign companies as long as they stay clear of it, and the economic growth contra rests this setback. Bangkok is well known as the center of economic growth in Thailand but doesn’t have a very strong currency against the euro, which means a low exchange rate which is beneficial for the company. Also, the interest rate is being kept low as well as inflation, which are signs of welcome to foreign investment; another positive trait for us is…

Vietnam’s securities markets are supervised and essentially managed by the State Securities Commission which is part of the Ministry of Finance. A Law on Securities (23/08/2006) was adopted in June of 2006 to facilitate the development of the securities market speedily and sustainably. Ten years after Vietnam's stock exchange began, it's become a symbol of what the country is trying to achieve but has yet to fully realize: a market-based economy. In this communist nation, the stock market is seen as the ultimate symbol of capitalism, because people have the freedom to choose their own financial fates, for good or bad, through their investments. The stock market has grown significantly — only two stocks were traded in the beginning, compared with 586 today on both the Ho Chi Minh Exchange and the Hanoi Exchange — and is attracting a growing number of domestic investors. It's also become a crucial channel for companies that want to raise medium- and long-term capital. As stock market plays an important role in mobilizing capital for companies, we would like to provide some basic information about the operation of Vietnamese stock market.…

At the end of the 1980s and early 1990s, the economies of Southeast Asia developed rapidly. Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore and Korea experienced an average annual GDP growth of 12%, which was called “the Asian miracle”. Among them, Thailand experienced approximately 15% GDP growth, and Malaysia experienced almost 20% GDP growth. But this momentum of economic growth did not last long. This rapid development not only brought huge economic profits, but also exposed the weaknesses and problems which overheated their economic development. These problems did not get much attention and got worse. In this case, the financial crisis broke out in 1997. This crisis was first seen in the currency depreciation and stock market. Starting in Thailand, the Thai baht devalued swiftly and lost more than half of its value and the Thai stock market also dropped 75%. As a consequence, many banks and companies had to declare bankruptcy. Due to the economic globalization, following Thailand, almost all of the Asian countries were plunged into severe economic difficulties. The crisis forced most Asian currencies to depreciate precipitously in a short period, and their currencies’ exchange rate against the dollar dropped between 10% to 70%. The change in foreign exchange market also affected the Asian stock market, and caused stock prices to slump by more than 30%. Besides, combined with the severe inflation and withdrawals from foreign investors, the speed of the Asian overall economic growth slowed down. The speed of economic growth in Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and Philippine declined to 3% after 1997, and for Korea, there was a negative economic growth. In this crisis, Thailand is one of the most typical countries that gave up its fixed exchange rate regime and lost heavily. But there was also a country, Hong Kong, who stuck to its fixed exchange rate regime and succeeded in…
