Introduction:
The purpose of this lab was to determine the substances contained in a random mixture using qualitative analysis. Qualitative analysis is the analysis of a substance in order to ascertain the nature of its chemical constituents (Qualitative analysis). The substances that could be found were iron, cinnamon, corn starch, baby powder, copper, and strontium. A magnetism test was used to determine whether iron or cinnamon was contained in the substance. An iodine test was used to indicate whether corn starch or baby powder was contained in the mixture because it is an indicator. An indicator is a substance that undergoes a distinct observable change when conditions in its solution change (Indicator). A flame test was used to determine whether copper or strontium was contained in the …show more content…
Then we used a magnet wrapped in paper to conduct a magnetism test to determine whether or not iron was contained in the mixture. Then the iron was removed from the mixture using the magnet. After that we put 1/8 of an inch of the mixture into two vials labeled A and B before filling them with distilled water and shaking them in order to change the mixture from solid to liquid. Then we poured the contents of vial A into a test tube and recorded the color. Then we made a filter and put it into another test tube. Once the filter was secure we poured the contents of vial B into the test tube to filter out any particles. Once the mixture was done being filtered we recorded the color. Then we took a platinum rod and covered it with the filtered contents of vile B. After that we turned on a Bunsen burner using a flint lighter. We then stuck the platinum rod into the burner which burned off any excess on the rod. Then we coated it again with the filtered mixture and put the rod into the flame to conduct a flame test. After finishing all the tests we recorded our
