Deterrence is the “prevention of a crime”, however there are other types of deterrence, such as General Deterrence, which refers to “a goal of criminal sentencing that seeks to prevent others from committing a particular crimes similar to the one for which a particular offender is being sentenced” (textbook), for example avoiding repeating the same crime one has already committed due to being familiar with the consequence which would occur, such as being sentenced or charged.
Being familiar with a crime, would decrease the chances of committing the crime due to knowing what the outcome would be. Specific crime is preventing the “offender from engaging in repeat
criminality” The article explains the sentences and charges Maxine Charles received due to the crime she was involved with. Charles was given a 16 month sentence including charges and prohibited from driving and alcohol for a certain amount of time. General deterrence is reflected in this article, for example many are now aware of how alcohol can influence one's behaviour and cause them to commit a crime and can cause unintentional harm to an individual well being. This eventually led to consequences which has caused a lack of freedom in Charles life. 16 month sentence, $800 and prohibited from driving for a year and 9 months free from drinking due to stealing a vehicle with a child in the back seat. Is now a known consequence which would prevent others from committing due to being aware of the result.
