Devil and Tom Walker
(Modern Revision)
Tom Walker sat at his bedside feeling rather melancholy for he had not much to do but be chided at by his notorious witch of a wife. They both lived in their humble abode of an apartment in the middle of a city but they had a sublime view that overlooked the scenery of the domicile's dumpsters. They lived poorly, just barely getting by to afford a couple gallons of gas. Tom grew a hatred for almost everyone around and had only a handful of “friends”, he believed that money was the most valuable and important thing in his life.
As the night grew old, Tom decided to head to the bank for respite from his wife and cash in his paycheck so he got into his old, rusted, and paint chipped car. While near the midst of night he noticed a road that he hadn’t before and surmised that it could be a shortcut to the bank, Tom always did have a bad sense of direction, and ventured down said road. The road seemed lifeless as the city faded into forest and traffic perished, he continued driving.
Tom eventually stopped after a few miles of lifeless forest passed and suddenly he felt something shift in the back of his car. Tom slowly turned around and remained unperturbed as he saw a stranger sitting in his back seat, staring back at him, and he noticed the car doors were all locked. The stranger was a man who wore a sharp black suit with a distinguished red tie. As Tom looked into the man’s eyes he saw nothing but a vague reflection of himself, his greed and thirst for money. This is when he realized who the man was, Old Scratch.
He recalled tales of the demon before, how he can grant you any of your wildest desired. Tom decided to speculate with the mysterious man and after some conversation they made a compromise. Old Scratch could easily beguile Tom, as he did in said compromise; Tom left and returned home confident that he shall become rich. Tom found his way home after his travel and told his wife
