1. Hannah had a bad attitude about going to the Seder because didn’t want to remember anymore.
2. She entered a time of daydream were she was seeing a man crossing a field.
3. The Nazis told the villagers that they were going to nice new homes, were if they wanted to work they would be treated humanely.
4. Hannah described the boxcars as very jammed, so jammed that she couldn’t move around. She explained it as worse than the biggest subway jam.
5. Arbeit Macht Frie means work makes you free and it was a sign over top of the gates to the concentration camp.
6. When the girls arrived at the camps they were first stripped of their clothing, then they got all their hair cut off, and then they were herded into small tight rooms.
7. When the guard pointed to the towers and said” that is Jew smoke” he meant that the smoke from the towers were the burnings of the Jews that were killed in the camps and gas chambers.
8. The Every Bowls were plain old metal bowls that were handed out and they were so important to the prisoners because they were there ticket to bathing, eating, and drinking.
9. The middens were big garbage piles and they were so important because they were where the little children would hide when the guards would come.
10. The daily routine of the camp was rool call, breakfast, work, lunch, work, supper, and work. The breakfast was all potatoes and the work was usually work to keep the camp itself running such as the kitchen, cleaning, and guarding the houses.
11. The significance of the title Devil’s Arithmetic is that it is showing you the way the guard and Nazis were thinking like. They would punish you for the little things such as saying a word wrong or talking to loud. Gitl called it the devils arithmetic because even though this all happened she was still alive and she called this the devils arithmetic because even though they had twisted mines she was still alive.
12. Rivka meant that it is much harder to live in the camp and work so hard put get no respect. She also meant it was hard to live being hated for no reason and not being able to do anything to the person disrespecting you because if you did you would be killed. They meant they were all heroes because they all lived through the hardest jobs and day. They also meant they were heroes to all the other Jews because they were giving up there lives and working so hard to make sure the Jews of the future would not be treated like they were treated.
13. I think Aunt Eva is a hero because threw it all she was always there for everyone and she cared for will all the time and always looked out for him.
14. Hannah found out that Aunt Eva was really Rivka, Chaya’s friend from the camp that she gave up her life for.
15. Hannah changed over the novel by figuring out that her family was very important to her and that she figured what her family went through, with the concentration camps and the holocaust.

During World War II, about six million Jews were killed. As Hitler came to power, he accused Jews as the cause of unemployment of Germans. The Germans treated the Jews with immense hostility for their unemployment. Hans Peter Richer has described the unfair treatment of Jews in a book called Friedrich. They were given small amounts of food, usually too small. Their food was often rotted, and diarrhea was common. Many contagious diseases, like typhus, spread quickly due to the closeness of the inmates. As many as 500 people were forced into one barrack. Finally, some prisoners were forced to run the crematoriums. Prisoners in all three sub-camps of Auschwitz-Birkenau were subject to the assignment. When the prisoners arrived to the camp they were separated into two lines. The first line consisted of the men and women who looked fit to become labor slaves. The second line consisted of children, elderly, and visibly pregnant women who were unfit to work and were sent to “Take a shower”. Theses so called showers were really gas chambers where the Jews would be exterminated with Zyklon B pellets. Zyklon B was the poison that was dropped into the chambers through a small hole in the ceiling into the gas chamber.
