Introduction: * Mega infra-structure project of USD 90 billion with the financial & technical aids from Japan, covering an overall length of 1483 KMs between Delhi and Mumbai. * The corridor would include six mega investment regions of 200 square kilometers each and will run through six states Delhi, Western Uttar Pradesh, Southern Haryana, Eastern Rajasthan, Eastern Gujarat and Western Maharashtra. * This project incorporates Nine Mega Industrial zones of about 200-250 sq. km., high speed freight line, three ports, and six airports; a six-lane intersection-free expressway connecting Mumbai & Delhi and a 4000 MW power plant. * DMIC states constitute 43% of total length of rail network in the country (63,332km). * Funds for the projects would come from the Indian government, Japanese loans, and investment by Japanese firms and through Japan depository receipts issued by the Indian companies. DMIC Project Goals * Double employment potential in five years (14.87% CAGR) * Triple industrial output in five years (24.57% CAGR) * Quadruple exports from the region in five years (31.95% CAGR)
Project Influence areas: * An Investment Region (IR) would be a specifically delineated industrial region with a minimum area of over 200 square kilometers (20,000 hectares), * An Industrial Area (IA) would be developed with a minimum area of over 100 square kilometers (10,000 hectares).
Review of Rail Network:
The Indian Railways has two backbone lines linking Delhi with Mumbai. These include:
a) The Delhi - Mumbai broad gauge line routed via Mathura Junction, Kota, Ratlam, Vadodara and Surat.
b) The Delhi - Mumbai broad gauge line running via Rewari, Jaipur, Ajmer, Marwar Jn., Palanpur, Ahmedabad, Vadodara and Surat.
The above two lines converge into a single route between Vadodara and Mumbai.
Jawaharlal Nehru and Mumbai Ports and Panvel junction constitute the principal destinations for freight services.
