Even though there were many important discoveries relating to insulin and diabetes, there still was no cure or treatment for it. Individuals diagnosed with this disease died shortly after diagnosis. In the early 1900’s, Frederick Allen – a leading diet therapist – invented a diet specifically for diabetic patients. He called it ‘the undernutrition approach’ where as his patients called it ‘the starvation diet.’ This diet allowed the diabetic patients an intake of 800-1000 calories per day for six days and fewer calories on the seventh day. It wasn’t ideal but the goal of this diet was to prolong the life of diabetic patients until hopefully a cure was discovered. (Turner, Novo Story of Insulin - Part 1, n.d.)…

Diabetes is a condition which affects the body’s ability to use glucose. Glucose is one of the body’s principle fuels and is an energy rich sugar that is broken down by the cells to produce a small packet of energy that powers the millions of biochemical reactions that constantly take place in the body. Simply put, glucose provides energy to all of the cells in the body. The cells take in glucose from the blood and break it down for energy. Some cells, such as brain cells and red blood cells, rely solely on glucose for fuel.…

I discovered that I was not going to drown in ignorance and helplessness any longer. Instead, I wanted to understand more about the disease and I was not about to stand idly and watch my mother struggle. I explored on the internet, paid visits to the library, took extra classes at school, and ultimately strived to attain the confidence that comes only with knowledge. I pursued the causes and effects of diabetes, and offered the emotional support that my mother’s physician could not provide. Now, I work together with my mother to create healthy and balanced diet plans for not only my brother and father, but also my aging grandparents and…

Type II Diabetes is a rapidly growing disease in our country. Unfortunately, many of us know at least one person who battles through this metabolic disease. I chose the article titled The sugar disease-understanding type 2 diabetes mellitus written by Georgina Casey to review and learn from. This article was found in the Continuing Professional Development +Nurses Journal published in March 2011. My grandmother has battled with this disease for many years and it has slowly progressed to cause multiple health complications. She continues to battle this disease both physically and financially. With an extensive family history and seeing the effects it can have on a person, I found it important to educate myself and learn more about this disease.…

Talking about diabetes in one thing. Talking about diabetes while it waits your doorstep is a whole other story. I live with a high risk of diabetes. Countless members of my family have been diagnosed with this disease and some have passed away because of it. Diabetes runs through both sides of my family. My paternal grandmother, my maternal grandfather, my maternal grandfather’s brothers, and my maternal grandmother’s older sister all suffer from the same disease. For all of them, the daily routine never changed. They all swallowed pill after pill and conducted blood test after blood test. To this day, I still remember watching them swallow pills the size of almonds and cringing whenever they pricked themselves to conduct a blood test. I…

According to the National Diabetes Statistics Report for 2014 published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 21 million Americans of all ages have been diagnosed with diabetes as of 2012. This number only includes those who have been diagnosed by a medical professional and from this population; almost 95% of diagnosed adults have Type II diabetes. The difference between Type I and Type II diabetes is that Type I often times affects children who’s cells fail to produce insulin, which is important in the regulation of blood glucose. With Type II diabetes patients are insulin resistance, meaning that the cells in the liver, muscle, and fat are unable to produce enough insulin to regulate blood glucose…

There are many different glucose monitors available for patients. The patient needs to have a device that is easy for them to use and convenient. A patient’s visual acuity and dexterity skills should be assessed prior to selecting a blood glucose monitoring device. A device is usually selected to meet the patient’s needs in collaboration with a diabetic educator at a health care facility.…

From the outsider's perspective a diabetic’s life has most likely taken shape into many stereotypes. Without there being a 1st hand connection to this disease, or the proper education, there are many gaps between the standard knowledge and the specialized information that goes along with type 1 and 2 diabetes. Managing diabetes and prediabetes is challenging, especially when those around you of skills were not given the proper form to assist themselves or others concerning the nutritional and the process of digestion.…

    Type 1 Diabetes

Type 1 diabetes is a disease of life style instead of an infectious disease. Diabetes is a prime example of the transitional shift that has taken place in public health over the past 100 years. In the past, infant mortality and infectious diseases such as influenza were responsible for shorter life spans and among the predominant causes of mortality. Now cancers, heart disease, and diabetes are the leading causes of modern day mortality rates and have a strong link to modern lifestyles. In the 1950's one out of three people with type 1 diabetes would die within 25 years after being diagnosed, today that number is only 7% (NIH 2013). The survivability of type 1 diabetes has increased since the 1950's while the global prevalence of both types…
