Marking Period 1
1. (S) -"It bounces on my lap, a Ho-Ho." Page 3
Well it's very simple, someone was calling her a whore. She was sitting in the bus when a kid threw his trash at her and told her something just with the wrapper.

2. (Th) -"If there's anyone in the entire galaxy I am dying to tell what really happened, it’s Rachel." Page 5
The theme is all surrounded by Melinda's secret. Plus the only person Melinda wants to tell is Rachel. Her ex-Best friend.

3. (Ch) -"I get out of bed and take down the mirror. I put it in the back of my closet, facing the wall." Page 17
It looks like Melinda doesn't have any self-confidence. She took down the mirror because she doesn't like looking at herself. She doesn't like looking at the "new" Melinda.

4. (C) -"I turn up my music to drown out the noise" Page 36
Sometimes I do the same thing. When I’m at a party that’s so boring with boring music, I just put my ear buds in my ears and turn up the music and when I’m doing some homework I listen to music to concentrate.

5. (Ch) -"I bite my lips........It tastes like metal." Page 5
When Melinda bites her lips, it’s like her way of cutting herself. She does this to forget about her secret but really she can't forget.
Marking Period 2

1. (E) - “David stares at Mr. Neck, looks at the flag for a minute, then picks up his books and walks out of the room. He says a million things without saying a word.” Page 57
David, he stands up for himself. He doesn’t stay quite like Melinda. David is always good until he has to stand up and speak up. He knows his rights and what he can do.

2. (R) - “I see a girl caught in remains of a holiday gone bad, with her flesh picked off day after day as the carcass dries out.” Page 64
Melinda made this turkey sculpture that reflects her. Her thanksgiving didn’t go well as planned. Ever since school started she didn’t have any friends and she’s has been picked on. Exactly like her sculpture.

3. (S) - “I bite

She stares at herself in the mirror, examining every self inflicted scar from picking scabs. Her skin tone is grey and dull. Her hair has gotten oily and unkempt. She stopped caring about her looks and was not aware of it. There are age spots on her face that seem to have appeared over night. She touches her face and strokes the bags under her eyes with her finger tips. She looks now at what used to be a beautiful smile and cannot believe that her teeth have decayed, they are almost gone. It saddens her and she looks away. She feels ashamed of what she has become. She looks back at the mirror only to be looking into her eyes. With a hoarse voice she utters the words, “How did this happen?”…

The themes of this short story include jealousy, obsession with narcissism and the emergence of another identity. In this short story, jealousy is displayed when Monica has the narrator choose between the real her and the Monica in the mirror. In the story, “Once, she said, “You know, sometimes I think you like me better there”—she pointed to a mirror—“than here”—she pointed to herself. She said it teasingly, with a little laugh, but in her look was an anxious question.” The Monica in the mirror was described in this excerpt: “a fresh Monica, a vibrant Monica, a Monica with a glow of pleasure in her face. She was dressed in clothes that no longer seemed a little drab, a little elderly, but were handsomely understated, seductively restrained.” The real Monica is depicted in the excerpt “Not for a moment did the mirror make her look young, or beautiful, for she was not young and she was not beautiful. But it was as if some inner constriction had dissolved, some sense of her drifting gradually into unhappiness.” Jealousy is what drove the…

This is a series of subjects about self-leadership, i.e. to lead themselves. A flat mirror gives you the look of who and what you are. But to help ourselves "feel" better, we dress up and act confidently in front of the mirror. This in turn is a recipe for disaster when the reality gradually sets in.…

    Mirror Mirror

In my young and more imaginative days I'd spend the hour in ballet class not doing plies on the barre, but talking to myself in the long mirror behind it. I was convinced that within the mirror there was another world, another dimension in which another me lived. Mirror Me was perfect in my eyes for even then I knew the real me wasn't. I found solace in knowing that somewhere there was version of myself that was perfect and I suppose this is where my deep fascination with my reflection was born. But things are so different now. Gone are the days when I could converse with my reflection in the mirror, to do that now would make me even more of a social pariah. I look in the mirror and now I don't see perfection, I see a vile revolting specter of the girl I am, as I wait for Mirror Me to speak I just sit and glare.…
