The Santa Rosa Philharmonic Youth Symphony (SRPYS) is an organization which supports young adults who have a passion for music, inspires excellence in musicianship, and advanced strong leadership skills through their program. Many parents, students, and community members are concerned that because local elementary and middle schools have had to cut the music programs from their curriculum, the lack of support will decline and the appreciation and enjoyment from talented individuals will be discouraged. SRPYS is an organization which has developed plans to educate and advance the skills of young musicians so they may perform at their highest potential.…

The music group consisted of about sixty-three bowed string instrumentalists, ten woodwind instrumentalists, nine brass instrumentalists and four percussion instruments and the conductor is Esa-Pekka Salonen.…

For my humanities report, I attended the Wind Ensemble concert at the Timko Barton lobby on October 8, 2015. The concert was so inspiring and refreshing for me since I love music and am currently studying music. Sitting with some many people and listening to beautiful music from a variety of genres was so restoring to the soul. Dr. John Jenkins, the director, was so motivating in every piece of music and of the program. The concert program ran smoothly as the ensemble band transitioned gradually to each different song piece. In addition the scenery added to the peaceful presence during the show. Since the concert took place in the lobby of the music hall, people saw the bright lights coming from the ceiling and they also enjoyed to majestic surrounding of the large glass windows. The Wind Ensemble concert event was a smoothing time to reflect on…

I would like to express my earnest (and long overdue) appreciation to you for serving as one of our facilitators during the last All Corps Event. We needed many facilitators like you to support this very important work and we are lucky that you agreed to help us. We are highly obliged for the time and effort you have put in as a volunteer facilitator despite your busy schedule and the various responsibilities that you have as a teacher. The corps members who participated in your group shared very positive feedback in the survey and are yearning for more! As Corbin and I prepare for the Spring All Corps Event on March 19th, it is our hope that you would lead a session to build on the previous experience.…

The last piece conducted was “A Child’s Garden of Dreams” by David Maslanka. The tone colors of this piece had a pinging and jingly. There was much imitation in this piece and it reminds me of a twilight movie. The rhythm was long and smooth. The tempo was played in andante and the dynamics started in mezzo piano and crescendos to mezzo forte.…

The Collin College Spring Creek Campus was fortunate due to the Department of Music’s Faculty Recital on Thursday, October 29, 2015, at 7:30 pm in the John Anthony Theatre. The four performers at this recital were Brian Allison on piano, Garry Evans on clarinet, Natalya Pitts on piano, and Alicja Usarek on violin. The music program that night was comprised of five works, including: “Fantasy for Two Pianos in A Minor”, “Six Studies in English Folksong”, “Melody in A Minor”, “Dance Preludes”, and “Suite for Violin, Clarinet and Piano Op. 157b.” After listening to each of the musical compositions in person, I formed my initial opinions, researched their historical backgrounds and characteristics to provide an informative concert review.…

On October 26, 2010, I attended an oboe concert in Parker Theatre. It was such a wonderful experience because I loved the music styles and the stage presence shown by the members of the Hudson Valley Philharmonic String Quartet. This was the first time for me to see a performance in the theatre. When I got a ticket and entered the concert hall, I was surprised because compared to the other concert hall, Mckenna Theatre, the place was smaller and the stage was middle of the hall, and seats were set half way around the stage which was interesting to me. There were five performers which used five different kinds of instruments: oboe, piano, violin, viola, and cello. They were stylistically different pieces that allowed me to experience the various sounds of music. It was a short concert, which I found interesting, and I felt like staying there after the concert. Since I sat in the center of the hall and in the second row from the front, the scale of each performance was energetic and lively.…

During the Nutcracker I recognized some of the music through out the show. It was classic music that played. The Nutcracker reminded me of the music we listen to in class when we were learning about there romantic period. I thought that the dancing was very pretty and went along with the music very well. I was amazed how you could hear all the different instruments during the show. I personally heard the violin a, flute, cello, clarinet, horns, trumpets, trombones, and also I heard the string family in the Nutcracker. There was more instrument in the show, but the instruments that mention stood out the most to me while I was at the show. I thought all the dances went well and corresponded with the music. I thought of the flow of the music…

The groups that performed included the Chamber Orchestra, Flute Ensemble, Brass Ensemble, Dr. Nathan Daughtrey and Jerod Oakes who played percussion, Nathan Barrick who played the piano, and Allyson Goff who was the mezzo-soprano. The conductors for the different pieces included Ms. Laura Stevens for Madrigals and Dr. Brian Meixner for the brass pieces. The principal performers included Dr. Nathan Daughtery and Jerod Oakes on the percussions, Allyson Goff singing mezzo- soprano, and Dr. Jack Turner on the cello. The instruments included the piano, percussion drums, violin, viola, cello, flute, trumpet, French horn, euphonium, and tuba. The only voice part included a mezzo-soprano. I believe that the purpose of this concert was to showcase the students who have been taking lessons or have been performing in a group all semester.…

It has been a joy to be in your class Dr. Petersen, thank you for all the musical knowledge you have given to me this semester. Prior to this class I had no musical background and I had never played an instrument. I have always been interested in the history of music and its evoltion through the ages. I am extremly grateful for you shedding light on the different cultures and their musical preferneces. It really broadened my horizon because all I use to listen to was hip hop and now I am listening to jazz , classical, and am overall more open minded. Hopefully I will put this information to good use in the future as I am trying to be a DJ and I will definitely sample famous legends like Bethoven and Duke Ellington because their works laid the…
