Diamonds: A Girl’s Best Friend Advertisement is seen everywhere, twenty-four hours a day seven days a week; in commercials when we watch television, in billboards when we drive, in magazines when we read, in the radio when we listen to music, and even on our favorite internet sites when we surf the web. Advertising has created a society in which ads tell the consumer what to buy. They tell us what we need to buy because they are portraying cultural trends that our society today has learned to follow; ads are then doing the job for us by informing us of what those trends are. Advertisement encourages consumerism through the appeal of one’s emotion, logic, and ethics and like that consumers are bound to purchase products that will altogether give growth to the economy. The advertisement for Zales, The Diamond Store, found in the December 5, 2011 issue of Us Weekly uses diamonds representing water, a celebrity relaxing in a bathtub, and the phrase “Diamonds are a girl’s best friend” in order to persuade women who are conscious of their appearance and beauty and so in search of jewelry or men who want to acquire a valuable gift as jewelry for women to buy their new Jessica Simpson collection. Zales, The Diamond Store, has used Jessica Simpson as a spokesperson for its products. In the advertisement, she is naked since all she is wearing is a diamond necklace and is shown with her hair and make-up done. She is relaxing in a white bathtub filled with diamonds. The diamonds are white and shiny and her body is visible only from her shoulders up. Simpson is by herself and her right hand is delicately placed on the diamonds she is bathing in while her left hand is on the rim of her head, barely touching her hair. The ad portrays Simpson as facing forward, to display her full face. She has a serious and relaxed look and the setting is filled with dim lights and dull coloring of shades of gray, black, and white. At the corner of the ad, there is a picture of the different

    Sociology of Consumption: “Killing Us Softly” Course Code: AHSS 1050 “Killing Us Softly”, is a documentary that explains the effects of advertising. As mentioned in the video, on a daily basis we are exposed to nearly 1 500 ads a day, and it is evident not all the ads are watched, however they do manage to make it to the back of our heads. So even if we do not pay close attention to what the ad is saying, if the product that was being advertised comes in front of us we still manage to remember that we had seen the product advertisement earlier. The documentary takes a further look at the main reason why ads are made, and the conclusion made is that when products don’t sell, ads are made in the sense, telling their customers they need the product or else they are incomplete. I believe this is a general fact, everyone know that the main needs of any person are, some type of clothes to cover their body, food to eat, water to drink and some sort of shelter. However, when these ads are presented they create an urge in the sense the person believes that have to have the product being advertised. The example given in the documentary was of ageing creams. They are advertised in a way that older aged women feel they have to have the cream or else there is something wrong with them. Another example, is straightening irons, the traditional way of straightening hair is using a hair dryer, or any ordinary straightening iron sold at the store. However, there certain brands advertised in which people believe they are better which is not true. Even though all brands are the same, just because of the ad people believe one is better than the other and that is the only one they want. So when markets say ads sell more than product, concepts, thoughts and values, this is what they refer to.     In 1533, Atahuallpa, emperor of the Incas was presented to Conquistador Francisco Pizarro on a golden throne accented with the feathers of exotic birds. Upon meeting, Atahuallpa was asked cast away his religion for Christianity and accept the King of Spain as his ruler. When he refused, he was taken prisoner and eventually killed. His gold was sent back to Spain, and his people were enslaved. Why is it that the Spanish conquered the Incas and not the other way around? UCLA geology professor and Pulitzer prize winner Jared Diamond delves into this issue in his 1997 talk, “Why Did Human History Unfold Differently On Different Continents For The Last 13,000 Years?” He argues: over the last 13,000 years, biological and evolutionary patterns have had a dramatic effect on human population numbers, technology development, disease proliferation, and the determination of conquest and land domination. Diamond supports his claims by raising questions about human history that he goes on to answer and then recap later in his talk. . His purpose is to question why certain races advanced faster than others, in order to rebuke the former theory that stated that “world populations” (Diamond 7) advanced at different rates due to the average IQ of their people. Diamond presents a provocative tone throughout his speech, urging the audience of scholars and technologists to think about and consequently agree with his point of view on human history over the last 13,000 years.
