In this article Ravitch argues that to have a good education our schooling system needs to focus more solely on the student's needs and not truly on just the material. School should be more than just studies, it makes the students get involved and form relationships through their studies. Becoming social, forming relationships, and solving problems through one another is a healthy way to approach school. I agree with what Ravitch argues because school is more than just learning and testing. School systems are using the “No child left behind” and as a result teachers are only focusing on standardized testing. The context is the idea that students aren’t learning the right way for their development. Diane Ravitch, a research professor at New York's University's Steinhardt School of Culture, education, and human development. Being a professor at NYU she has the credibility to sway readers her way. The writer ultimately states her own views on the objective and shows authenticity. Her tone is direct stating facts like she's in a debate. Her approach is telling what is wrong with the system and what they are doing right and what they need to do to improve. The school system only focuses on math and reading and standardize testing. She states the “no child left behind” and “head start program” and how they don’t work for learning because they focus on a federal system on curriculum. Also states how the privileged private schools are better than the public schooling system because they allow for shared interests and developing children over their interests.     Using quotes from the kids and the teachers, Kozol is helping us use our emotion to feel and understand where they are coming from. With him showing his sympathy and concern towards the issue, that same feeling began to overpower his audience. He even refers to court cases that eventually led minorities to experience education period (Brown vs. Board of Education and Plessy vs. Fergueson). Pathos and ethos are some of the persuasive techniques he uses heavily as the high school students who express to him “of the limited number of bathrooms that are working in the school, “only one or two are open and unlocked for the girls to use”. Like many others at the time, the grade school where he teaches is of inferior quality, segregated, understaffed, and in poor physical condition. Kozol loses his first job as a teacher because he introduces children to some African American poetry that subtly questions the conditions of blacks in America. Years later, after holding many other socially conscious jobs, Kozol misses working with children. He decides to visit schools across America to see what has changed since those early days of reform.     My perception was changed completely after reading this book, I never knew that so many schools were situated in the ghettos and were so badly overcrowded or only had two toilets working for about 1000 students, and no toilet paper. What really upsets me is the fact that within the exact same city limits, there are schools situated in the suburbs which average 20 per classroom and have enough supplies and computers for every child to receive one as their own. Of course the majority of these suburban schools are dominantly white and the urban schools hold the minorities. The dropout rates that are listed in the book are ridiculous. Most of the children drop out in secondary school and never receive a proper education because of the lack of supplies or lack of teachers' interests. The majority of the kids are black or Hispanic in the poor schools and the suburban schools hold the upper-class white children and the occasional Asian or Japanese children who are in the gifted classes.     The writing Revolution is written by Peg Tyre, who is the director of strategy at the Edwin Gould Foundation. He describes an education reform the occurred at Dorp High School, a school which otherwise may have been closed due to poor academic performance. The school's leader, Deirdre DeAngelis, drastically reformed the school’s curriculum and teaching methodology. The faculty, using DeAngelis’ methods, achieved significant success in improving their student’s academic achievements. They did so by focusing on the fundamentals: analytical and structured writing. In the article, Tyre describes the case of a student, Monica DiBella, who has trouble at fundamental reading and writing, to the point where she is incapable of writing an essay. After learning with the reformed curriculum that DeAngelis introduced, Monica’s weak language skills are overcome and she graduates with scores typical of college bound students. Tyre uses his description of the revolution at Dorp High School as testimony of how the reforms have improved students’ writing aptitudes as well as overall academic performance. In addition, he notes that teachers and administrators at other institutions have also reflected and explored DeAngelis’ teaching methodology.     The section that had the most impact on me was chapter 3 “The Savage Inequalities of Public Education in New York”. The reason it impacted me the most was for several reasons, but there was a few that stood out the most. The first reason is the comments that were made by the wealthier students with better educations, and from the principles who ran the schools. An example was the principle from Riverdale Elementary school P.S. 24; he stated “I have to ask myself why there should be an elementary school in District 10 with fifteen hundred children. Why should there be an elementary school within a skating rink? Why should the Board of Ed allow this? This is not the way things should be.” I agree, it shouldn’t be like that, every child should have an equal opportunity to learn with the best education no matter what their race or ethnicity is. The fact that we are living in a nation where civil rights were established, and our schools are still segregated is truly upsetting and disturbing. However, the main reasons to why it is segregated are because of money and stereotypes.     He wrote an article called "Still Separate, Still Unequal" about poverty schools compared to wealthy schools. This article also included a story about a student teacher wanted to bring in a pumpkin for her students because it was around Halloween. The only way that the teacher would be able to bring in something like that would to try to apply it to some curriculum to help educate the children while they carve the pumpkin. So she created a curriculum that would contain science, arithmetic and some language of arts. Even though she created a lesson for them, it still did not apply to California's standardized test that the children would have to take but it did give the children a new insight on objects such as pumpkins. This lesson even though it would not help them would stick with them for a while. They are always the strongest topics when a teacher actually takes their time to develop a lesson that would help a child learn the curriculum rather than the curriculum just handed to them right away like in Mike Rose article on "I Just Want to Be Average." Mike Rose, a professor of education from UCLA, wrote this article about the segregation in schools and how differently classes can be taught. He said in this article that one of his teacher as a kid was not very educated in English that the students would have to "read the district's required text Julius Caesar aloud for the whole semester and once they were done, the students would continue to read the book over and switch parts." Does this really educate a student? To just give a children a book and say "here, you read this and find the meaning out for yourself."     The No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act focuses on standardized testing in all American schools. It is the Bush administration's sweeping educational reform, aimed at improving the performance of the nation's public schools by introducing accountability. Supporters of the act claim that it will increase the performance of all school children by raising the standards and allowing parents greater freedom in choosing the school they want their child to attend. The act also puts in place a system of punishment for schools if their student body does not perform to the standards set down by the National government (NCLB act). As well as increasing standards, this act also encourages teachers to use a curriculum that the government developed with "scientifically based research" (a phrase that appears 111 times in the act) (Hammond 4). While standardized curriculum and increased standards seem like they would improve children's learning, in reality it hurts them by pushing them too hard academically instead of focusing on social development, and denying them specialized attention based upon their individual abilities. The debate surrounding this has become a significant topic since the Act is currently under review and could be in the process of reauthorization. At the time of its inception, both political parties (Republicans and Democrats) supported the NCLB Act, however, both parties are now arguing over its validity. In 2005, there have been slight \adjustments to the regulations first set in 2005 by the Department of Education, but the revisions were not enough to gain full support from both parties. This act has failed to garner support from most Americans, and like most Americans, I also agree that this should not be reinstituted. No Child Left Behind was designed by the Bush administration to reduce the "learning gap" between different groups of students and to ensure better teacher equality.
