Lord of the flies
Lord of the flies was my book of choice in our classics project . It was written by William Golding, a British book writer and noble prize winner. I chose to read this book because I have heard good things about it, both from my parents and my classmates. Lord of the flies was the most appealing book to me in the collection we had to choose from. The book is considered a classic and is some of the most recognizable literature William Golding has written. I only had time to read the first half of the book, the rest I read in a summary. I regret having to read half the book in a summary, because it sounded very good and exciting.
The book is about a group of schoolboys from Britain who are evacuated from the country …show more content…
because of a raging war. Their plane gets shot down by the during the evacuation and they crash-landed on a deserted tropical island. Their pilot died in the crash, but the boys survived. The schoolboys were scattered all over the island. Two of the older boys, Ralph and Piggy, found a conch shell on the beach. Piggy suggested Ralph to blow as hard as he could in the shell, in hopes of everyone hearing them and grouping up. The plan worked flawlessly and after a little while, the beach was full of boys ranging from 10 to 16 years old. Ralph was now the leader of the group; his main goal was all the boys surviving and being rescued. He gave everyone a job, some were hunters who killed wild animals for food, some firekeepers who held a big bonfire on the mountain burning for passing ships to see and some built huts to sleep in. During the first few days everyone was happy there was no parents or grownups on the island. They felt free. But after a while half the group were terrified of a rumour going around, there was a beast hunting for little boys in the night. This caused the group to split up into two. One lead by Ralph and one lead by Jack. Jacks group was noticeably bigger. The boys became savages and killed each other with their bare hands. Jacks group lit the forest on fire to kill Ralphs group in it. Ralph ran out onto the beach, and collapsed because of exhaustion. When he woke up, a British officer stood upon him and rescued the boys.
Task 2A
Advantages and disadvantages to reading
Reading can be a great tool for learning about all sorts of stuff , but it’s also for entertainment purposes. Some people love reading books, and some think it’s dreadfully boring and a waste of time. In this text, I will talk about the advantages and disadvantages to reading.
My dad has always been encouraging me to read, “it will make you a better writer”, he said.
And to be honest with you, I haven’t read a single book outside school in years. The last time I did, I was in elementary school and read a book around 200 pages long. It was awfully boring to me. Sitting silently with a book in my hands for just a few minutes sounded terrible. Instead I used my time playing football and video games. When I was done with school I didn’t think a single thought about reading when I came home . All I could think about was the football match I had later or the video games I was going to play. “If you read 30 minutes a day, instead of playing video games or being with your friends, you would be a much greater writer and your vocabulary will expand”, my dad often said. And I totally agree with him, but those 30 minutes felt like hours to me, and I was just too tempted to do almost anything …show more content…
else.
I may not have read a lot of books, but I still read every day. My parents thought I didn’t read a single word after coming home from school, but the truth is I did, and I read a lot. I read sport articles, game reviews and all kinds of stuff on the internet. It may not have been the same level of literature as in books, but it still helped me expand my vocabulary and have a better understanding of the language. Reading random stuff on the internet and watching YouTube videos is also how I learned English. I genuinely believe I learned twice as much English after school, compared to in school. The internet gave me a huge advantage in English class. When I saw, or heard a strange word on the internet, I asked my parents what it meant. Now my little brother asks me when he hears a strange word.
There are clear advantages to reading.
Most people who read are often very smart and literate . You can learn about whatever you want through books, you can learn about nature, political issues, history, anything! And that’s what’s so great about it, you find a book you want to read and you read it. But books are not only used as a tool to learn new things, it’s mostly used for entertainment purposes. People read about terrible crimes, or travelling around the world or meeting people who lived ages ago. Books help you understand other people’s meanings and thoughts. And, which can give you a whole new perspective on the
world.
There are not a lot of disadvantages to reading. The disadvantages are often opinion related. An argument you hear very often, is how reading books is a waste of time. For example, why read about someone travelling to another country, when you can do it yourself? Well, some people may not have the time or money to travel to a different country. But by reading a book they can experience doing something, using a lot less time and no money. Books can give you lots of experiences and life lessons, you would otherwise never have. You can experience impossible things, like being another person or traveling to another universe. All from the comfort of your own bed. Have you ever wanted to become an astronaut? Do it. Want to become the best football player in the world? Do it. The possibilities are endless.
Regardless if you’re someone who constantly has a book to read or haven’t read a book in years, like me. Reading can be done in a lot of different ways. Personally, I use the internet to read, I only read about things I’m interested in and want to read about. Let’s say you’re very passionate about a subject, but hate reading books. For example, global warming. Then you can read about how to prevent global warming on the dozens of forums which exist on the internet. You can make your own posts about your thoughts and views on the subject and communicate with others on the same forum. Reading doesn’t have to be a boring thing you were forced to do at school. It can be exciting and interesting, and even fun. In my opinion everyone should find their own way of reading, while still having fun, if it’s reading books, reading things on the internet or something else. Reading is helpful and important, no matter how you do it.
