Diary Entry as a Jewish Child During Hitler's reign
Dear Diary, 9/23/1938

Germany has been under a new rule by Adolph Hitler lately, and it has been pure hell. His tyrannical rule makes it impossible for Jewish people to live in Germany, and I don't know how much longer my family can go on under these conditions. My friends have been sent off to a camp already. It's not too long before my family will have to go too. Economically, my family has struck an all time low. We have never been this short of money. Before Hitler's reign, my dad worked at a respectable position, until our religion was run down.

We made a living, and made a comfortable one at that. Now we're in hiding with our Christian friends gathering us food with their own money. My father has promised to repay him, but that's only if we get out of this alive. Socially, we've had to eliminate our contacts to the outside world. We can't talk to anyone but each other now because of our religion. Like I said, all our friends, and some relatives have already gone to the concentration camps. I don't see how he thinks the ideal human being looks a certain way. Everyone is different. He doesn't even look like the way he wants people to look.

I heard that nobody can leave the camps, and my dad says that we will not have to go to one of them if we stay quiet and make sure no one finds us here. It's really hard not being able to communicate with anyone, but at least our contact gives us the newspaper so we know what is going on in the world. I strongly disagree with what Hitler is doing and I think something needs to be done immediately, or else we might even be found here. I feel a sense of fear even looking out the window.

It was the worst thing ever. I seen so many bad things and had so many bad things happen. Dad got sick and didn't make it, I'm so sorry mom I tried to help him, but he didn't want help. They burned us and killed us if we were too weak or tried to escape. I never had anything like this happen in my hole life, I was scared and sad,but I fought through it and tried to make everything better. I wonder where you are and how you have been. The camps are terrible, they burn you and kill, and beat you up. I hoped they didn't do anything like that to you.…

On the Other Side: Letters to My Children from Germany 1940-46 was written by Mathilde Wolff-Monckeberg during the Hamburg air raids of WWII. Wolff-Monckeberg says in her first letter “This war would be conducted with the most horrible weapons and resources, its whole justification based on a daily incitement of lies, not an honest war, but an illegal and mean exploitation, as far as we were concerned.”1 The first letter boldly states that Wolff-Monckeberg views Germany’s participation in the war as a shameful endeavour driven by the “Fuhrer’s blind lust for conquest”2 Wolff-Monckeberg makes this ever apparent with letters about, Nazi invasions into other countries, the struggle that became surviving in war time Hamburg, and the shame brought on Germans by the atrocities committed by the Nazis.…

I walk into the stadium. There are so many people but not just Germans other nationalities are here to cheer on their country. I feel as if everywhere like they were watching my every move. I also notice some American reporters were also there, maybe this is my chance to get out to the world about what was happening here. The people here would know nothing about what’s going on here because Hitler had all the propaganda posters taken down and the cities cleared of anything that would alert the people from other countries. I hope I could have a chance of speaking with one of the U.S reporter but its not going to be easy with all the SS officers around watching. If they see me attempting to talk to the reporters I will be arrested and punished maybe even killed. I have decided that trying to talk to the reporters would be too risky so I will not try and talk to them. Because if I get arrested I would leave my girlfriend who is Jewish alone and could possibly get taken away, and my father would find out that I was going against Hitler and he believes in what Hitler is doing. If I got caught it could also put my family in danger who knows what Hitler would do with…

It all started because of Germany’s defeat in World War I. The allies forced the Germans to pay unfair war damages. Inflation made money almost worthless. People became desperate. Adolf Hitler gained favor with the German people by telling them of a glorified image of Germany and he gave them an excuse for loosing the war. He told them that the Jews stabbed Germany in the back. He said that it was all the Jews fault for World War I. The Holocaust took place in World War II. Its killed millions jews, gypsy, disable, polish, the ill, and ect. It was an effort by Adolph Hitler to utterly destroy the Jewish people. Six million Jews were killed in World War II, half of that six million were children and teenagers. If you had a related Jewish family member, you were considered a Jew, and therefore you must be killed. Few people made it out alive but it is about resistance in the Holocaust. It’s about who resisted, and how some made it out alive.…

It was January 2nd 1940, in a town called Berlin. The second World War has just started, and both sides were ready to fight. My family and i were hidden in sturdy attic tucked away from the Nazis, who were attacking us because we were jews The man who is letting us stay here is a “non-jew”, he seems very stern, but is actually quite nice. He was kind of a double agent. He pretends to be with the Nazis, but actually hides families like mine to keep them safe. My family and i are grateful, we know he is risking his life to protect ours.…

At first we weren't allowed to leave our homes for three days. Then we lost our right to own any objects of value. Next we were made to wear yellow stars, and forced to live in the ghettos of Sighet. We remained naïvely content in the ghettos until one day when were transported like animals to Auschwitz. Unknowing the horror that laid ahead of us. What have we done to deserve this? Absolutely nothing! All this just because we're Jewish. I am writing this letter to not only inform you that I have read your article. But to also prove that SS officers of Auschwitz are guilty of crimes against humanity for the torturing of prisoners who were already tormented to the extreme.…

I can’t stand it here right now, everything is against us Jews, people blame us for things that weren’t even our fault. We get blamed for diseases like the plague even though we have no control over anything. As if it wasn’t already bad enough we aren’t allowed to have our own religion, we are forced to be Christians like the rest. I have so much fear for my family and I because if they find that we are falsely praising the christian religion we would be exiled. We wished to have own land to grow crops and earn money to support our family but us jews are not allowed to own any land or even become members of a nobility. Little by little our family has been collecting things to eat and we give priority to our daughter who was to eat to survive.…
