Greg Heffley is a boy who thinks that summer vacations are basically a three-month guilt trip. He doesn't believe necessary be outside all day frolicking just because the weather's nice. The way he likes to spend his summer vacation is in front of the TV, playing video games with the curtains closed and the lights turned off. Unfortunately his mom thinks different to Greg. She believes that it's not normal for a kid to stay indoors when it's sunny out, so she try to get him do something outside like play soccer, go to the park or go to the pool. But Greg said that he spent the first part at his friend Rowley’s pool, and that didn't work out so good. …show more content…
But like I was saying his mother keeps trying to get him to go to the pool with her and his little brother, Manny, but the thing is that his family belongs to the town pool not the country club like Rowley’s family.
In the last year that Greg went to the town pool he swore to himself that he would never go back to that place again. He describes that go to the town pool was one of the most traumatic experiences of his life and every time his mom ask him to go to the town pool she makes that Greg puts some images in his young mind that he is been trying to forget.
In a Sunday his mother had a "house meeting" and said that money was tight that year and they couldn't afford to go to the beach, which means no family vacation. Now Greg only has two things to look forward to this summer. One is his birthday, and the other is when the last "Li'l Cutie" (the worst comic ever) runs in the paper.
He said that when the last "Li'l cutie" comes out, he and his dad will have to throw a party because they consider that something like that deserves a serious
celebration.
But while the last "Li'l cutie" comes out Greg must face the big issue between he and his dad wich is his sleep schedule because during summer vacation he likes to stay up all night watching TV or playing video games and then sleep through the morning. But his father gets kind of crabby if Greg still in the bed when he gets home from work. To make sure that Greg don't still sleep Greg's dad calls him at noon, but Greg just keeps the phone by his bed and when his dad calls he uses his "best wide-awake voice" and when he finishes talking with his father he back to sleep.
Other day Greg was in the middle of his show and his mom told him that he had to turn off the TV and find something else to do, so he called Rowley his best friend and invited him over. When Rowley went to his house they went straight to Rodrick's room in the basement. they dug around and then they found a horror movie at the bottom of Rodrick's drawer but the thing is that neither one of they had actually seen a horror movie before so that movie was a really big find. That day they waited for mom and dad to go to the bed, and then they watched their movie, well, technically Greg was the only one who watched it, because Rowley had his eyes and ears covered the whole entire time.
The movie was about a muddy hand that goes around the country killing people. And the last person who sees the hand is always the next victim. Greg said that the special effects were really cheesy and he wasn't even scared until the very end that's when the twist came. After the muddy hand strangled its last victim, it was crawling straight at the screen, and then the screen went black it meant that the next victim was gonna be Greg.
After seeing the horror movie Greg and Rowley didn't feel safe in the basement so they had to spend the rest of the night locked in the bathroom with the lights on, but the next day his father found them asleep. So Greg had to explain him why they were sleeping in the bathroom and then he was punished for watching the movie without permission.
From that day his mother was left concerned to see how boys as the age of Greg watch too many violent movies and play too many video games. Then she said that was gonna start a reading club for the boys in the neighborhood so she could teach them about all the great literature we were missing out on.
Then she spreaded the word to the mothers of the neighborhood to take their children to the reading club, and for the first day Greg's mom told everyone to take their favorite book to the meeting so they could pick on and discuss it. But when his mother saw the kind of books that they brought she told them that they were gonna have to start with the "classics". Then she brought a bunch of books that she must've had since she was a kid as an example of a classic book but she gave them the option of go on a field trip to the library and find something they all agreed if her proposals didn't like them.
The second day of the Reading is fun club the number of members took a big hit overnight because most of the guys who came the first day bailed out and then the club just had two members Greg and Rowley. Rowley took two books along with him. Greg took a book too it was the ninth volume in the "Magick and Monsters: dark realms" series. He took it along with him because he figured that his mom would be like it because it's pretty long and there aren't any pictures but the thing was that she didn't approve of the illustration on the cover of his book because she didn't like the way it portrayed women so her mom decided choose the book for them, she choose a book called "charlotte's web" which looked like one of those "classics" that she mentioned before.
Time later the reading is fun club was canceled and Greg started to been worry because there was shortly time for his birthday, this year he would be a family party. In this part of the book Greg recounts his experiences with their previous birthday parties. First starts with the friend parties, he said that when you had one all your guests think they have the right to play with the presents and every time Greg has a friend party his mom invites her friend's kids, so he end up with a bunch of people at his birthday party that he barely even know and worst of all those kids don't buy the gifts, their moms do. So even if he gets something like a video game, it's not a video game he actually wants to play. The last year he had practice on his birthday and his mother dropped him off at the pool he got so many birthday noogies that he couldn't lift his arms to swim. So when his birthday comes he prefers just keep kids out of the equation.
This year his mother said him could have a family party as long as he promised not to do his "usual" with the birthday cards who consist in put them all in a neat pile, and then he rip each one open and shake it to get the money out, as long as he don't stop to read anything, he can gets a through a pile of twenty cards in under a minute But that time his mother said he had to read every card and acknowledge the person who gave it to him.
After agree on how to behave at his party, he had been doing a lot of thinking about what he wanted for his birthday this year and what he wanted was a dog. Greg had been asking for a dog for the past three years, but his mother said that they had to wait until Manny's completely potty trained before they get one. He know that his dad wanted one too. He used to have one when he was a kid but they had to wait to Manny. The other thing he wants but he had no chance of getting for his birthday was a cell phone, just because last year his parents got Rodrick a cell phone last year and he racked up a bill for three hundred dollars in first month. So the only thing he is asking for that year is a deluxe leather recliner, the main reason who makes him to want his own recliner is because if he had one he wouldn't had to go up to his room after watching TV late at night. He could just sleep right in the chair.
On a Friday noon Greg was watching TV, minding his own business, when he heard a knock at the front door, his mom said there was a "friend" there to see him, he immediately thought it must be Rowley but it wasn't, it was Fregley a weird kid who lives up the street and the kid who Greg considers dangerous. After he recovered from his initial shock, he slammed the door shut then he started to panic because he didn't know what Fregley was doing at his front door. After a few minutes Greg went by and looked out the side window, and Fregley was still standing there. Greg thought that he had to take drastic measures, so he went to the kitchen to call the cops. But his mother stopped him before he could finish dialing 911. Then his mother told him that she invited Fregley over because she saw him "lonely" and she thought that it would be a good idea if she invited Fregley to play with him. But Greg didn't consider that a good idea
Now he believes that had two things to worry about: the muddy hand and Fregley. He said that if he had to choose the one to get him first he would prefer the muddy hand in a heartbeat.
Greg's birthday came and he guessed things get more or less like he expected. The relatives started showing up around 1:00 p.m. He asked his mom to invite as many people as possible so he could maximize his gift potential, and he got a pretty good turn out. He likes to cut the chase on his birthday and get right to the gifts so he told every one to gather in the living room then he took his time with the cards just like his mom asked, later he moved on to the wrapped presents but there weren't a lot of those. The first gift, from his parents was small and heavy, which he thought was a good sign. But he was still pretty shocked when he opened it. When he looked more closely he found out it wasn’t an ordinary cell phone. It was called "ladybug". The phone didn't have a keypad on it or anything. it only had two buttons: one to call home and one for emergencies. So Greg thought that it was pretty much useless.
All his other gifts were clothes and other stuff i didn't really need. He was still hoping there weren't any places his parents could be hiding a giant leather chair, he gave up looking. Then his mom told every one it was time to go in to the dining room to have some cake. Unfortunately, Uncle Joe's dog, Killer, had beaten them to it. Greg was hoping that his mother went out and gets him a new cake but she just took a knife and cut away the parts the dog didn't touch. His mother cut him a big piece but, by that point he wasn't really in the mood for cake especially not with Killer throwing up little birthday candles under the table
The next day of his birthday his mother said that they could go to the mall and get a "makeup gift". His mother took Manny and Rodrick for along the ride and she said they could each pick out something too Greg felt that totally unfair, because it wasn’t their birthday. They walked around the mall for a while and ended up in a pet store. Greg was hoping they could pool their money to buy a dog, but Rodrick seemed to be interested in a different kind of pet. His mother handed them each a five-dollar bill and told them they could buy whatever they wanted, Greg finally settled on a really cool angelfish that's all different colors. Rodrick picked out a fish, too but the reason Rodrick chose it was because the label on the tank said the fish was "aggressive". Manny spent his five bucks on fish food, at the first Greg thought it was because Manny wanted to feed the fish that Greg and Rodrick bought, but by the time they got home, Manny had eaten half the canister.
Then the next day Greg wrote very exited because it was the first time that he had his own pet, and he's kind of getting into it, he feed his fish three time a day and he keeps his bowl really clean, he even bought a journal so he could keep track of everything his fish does during the day. Greg was so exited with his fish that he asked to his parents if they could buy one of those aquariums and get ton of fish to keep his little guy company, but his dad said him that aquariums cost money and maybe he could ask for one for Christmas.
Anyway Greg has other dreams like been rich and famous but he's starting to get a little concerned that it hasn't happened yet. He figured he would at the least have his own reality TV show by now. But when he become famous he's gonna have to make some life changes. He believe that probably have to fly in private jets, because if he fly on a regular planes, he will get really annoyed when people in the back try to mooch off his first class bathroom. Another thing famous people have to deal with is that their younger siblings end up getting famous just because they're related. His closets brush with fame so far was when his mother signed him up for a modeling job a few years ago. she wanted to get pictures of him in clothes catalogues or something like that, but the only thing they used his picture for was on a medical book, and he is been trying to live it down ever since.
On a sunny day his mother was acting extra- cheery that morning, and he could tell she had something up her sleeve. In the morning she said that they all needed to get in the station wagon, and when he asked her where they were going, she said it was a "surprise". He noticed his mom had packed sunscreen and bathing suits and stuff in the back of the station wagon so he thought they must be headed for the beach. But when he asked her if he was right, Mom said the place they were going was better than the beach. A half hour later they pulled into a big parking lot and Greg knew exactly where they were. They were at the Slipslide Water Park, where they used to go as kids. Greg had memories of the Slipslide water park. One time his Grandfather took him there, and he left him in the waterslide area for practically the whole day. his grandpa told him he was gonna go read his book and he would meet him there in three hours. But he didn't actually go on any slides because of the sign at the entrance "under 48" must be accompanied by an adult"
So he basically wasted his day waiting for his grandpa to come back and get him and then they had to leave. Rodrick has bad memories of the Slipslide water park too. last year his band got hooked to do a show on the music stage they have near the wave pool. Rodrick's band asked the park people to set them up with a smoke machine so they could have some special effects for their show but some body screwed up, and they set Rodrick’s band up with a bubble machine instead.
And then Greg found out the reason of his mother took them to the water park that day: it was a half- price for families. When they got through the gates, his mom rented a stroller for Manny but he convinced her to spend a little more money and rent a double stroller, because he knew it was gonna be a long day and he wanted to conserve his energy
His mother parked the stroller near the wave pool, which was so crowded that they could barely even see the water. After they put on their sunscreen and found a place to sit, he felt a few raindrops, and then he heard a thunder. Then an announcement came over the loudspeaker " DUE TO LIGHTNING, THE SLIPSLIDE WATER PARK IS NOW CLOSED THANK YOU FOR COMING, AND HAVE A NICE DAY" so everyone hit the exits and got in their cars. But with all the people trying to leave at the exact same time, it was a total traffic jam.
His mother said she had a headache, and she went to the back to lie down. an hour later Traffic finally thinned out, and they got onto the highway. They stopped for gas and about forty-five minutes later they were home. Dad told him to wake his Mom up, but when he looked in the back of the station wagon; his mom wasn’t there when they found her she didn't really say anything on the ride back.
well there are some adventures that gregory had during his summer vacation, in my poor opinion this book it's really interesting I feel identifcated with gregory because I write a diary too and there are some parts in the book like his birthday parties where I passed similar situations. in general I really enjoy the book, the drawings, the histories, the characters, everything.
Oh yhea! And I almost forget write the end of the book... by the end of the book Gregory discovered the good part of all the adventures he had in that summer and in the final of the book he writes "the best summer ever!"
