Light and Dark Light and Dark. Also known as good and bad, but how do they relate to the Epic Hero? Beowulf is a poem about this hero that travels from place to place to fight off evil monsters. An Epic Hero must undertake a quest to achieve something o tremendous value to himself and his society. Therefore, an Epic Hero must go through challenging trials that will bring him either into the light or into dark. When Beowulf finished all his trials, lights started to burn all around him. In his second trial when he slays Grendel’s mom he was described as “A brilliant Light burned all around him, the lake Itself like a fiery flame.”(Page 70) Light burned all around him because he has successfully completed his second trial and the light was to represent his glory, but it was not his last. On his last trial, he kills the dragon and dies along with it, but he has completed all his trials, which means that his life has come to its end. By completing all his trials makes Beowulf an Epic Hero. He then tells his people, the Geats, “When the unreal flames have burned me, and build it here, at the water’s edge high.” Beowulf tells his people this because he wants the light from his funeral fire light show that he is a true Hero. This also shows that he is a God-like figure because he wants the light from the fire that was burning his body show what a true Hero is. Beowulf has defeated his first trial, which was to kill Grendel. That night when he defeated Grendel it says “to his lair, delighted with his night’s slaughter,” (Page 27) means that Beowulf is rejoicing his victory for killing Grendel. Grendel was not the only monster Beowulf has killed because he has travelled to many places and seen many other creatures of darkness and he wishes to continue killing monsters. It says, “Have watched me rise from the darkness of war, dripping with my enemies’ blood.” (Page 36) This quote is saying that Beowulf has been to

Satan, demonic forces, and fire flames come to mind when you think of evil. God, Angels, and heaven above the clouds come to mind when you think of good. An old epic poem kept alive by the Anglo Saxons represents all of these thoughts. An epic poem that consisted of many conflicts both good and evil. A strong hero and loyal warrior, who battles against the demons, and dragons from hell. A warrior born to sacrifice his life to save others. A man who swam across the ocean to uphold an image, a man who traveled many miles to avoid defeat? Beowulf a classical fictional hero who struggled against three evil monsters, endured challenges, suffered and was eventually victorious over evil. There is a thin line between good and evil, and like oil…

The setting of the battle against Grendel’s mother and the battle against the Dragon, in the movie detracts from my understanding of the poem. When Beowulf went to face Grendel’s mother in the poem, the lair was described as a place where even a “deer hunted through the woods by a pack of hounds, a stag with great horns…prefers to die on those shores.”(Beowulf 433) instead of going into the lake. Alternatively the movie depicts the lair as a difficult place to reach, but not impossible, it appears to be less scary than that of the poem. Throughout the battle against the Dragon, ‘Beowulf’s son,’ the setting is Grendel’s mother’s lair. In the poem, the battle took place in a different place, on the contrary in the movie, it was fought in the same place where Beowulf went to talk to Grendel’s mother. The characters, the sequence of events, along with the certitude behind Grendel’s progenitor and the background of the movie lessen my original comprehension of the…

The importance of the theme of good and evil is an important part of the story or in this case an epic poem. The hero is facing a big threat and needs to save the world. In the epic poem Beowulf translated by Seamus Heaney, it follows the dissension between the valiant and intrepid warrior and the supernatural evil that causes the message of good versus evil to be a primary theme throughout the poem. These struggles characterize both the protagonists and antagonists in the story, thus these opposite forces continually clash leading to a divide in society and a desire for good to outlast evil. Throughout the epic, the poet emphasizes the theme of barbaric against civilized through the message that one is classified based on the motives behind their actions, one cannot exist without the other, and divine intervention will always help good defeat evil.…

As the monster Grendel was terrorizing Herot, Beowulf sets out to help Hrothgar. It can be suggested that Beowulf is seeking fame and glory that will, in a sense, give him eternal life. Beowulf, before fighting Grendel's mother, proclaims, "Each of us will come to the end of this life on earth; he who can earn it should fight for the glory of his name; fame after death is the noblest of goals." After cutting off Grendel's claw and head he pursues the monster to make sure that he is dead, and when Grendel's mother seeks revenge he doesn’t hesitate to fight her. He originally sets out to help Hrothgar and does not intend to leave the quest unfinished. Again, near death, he thanks God for all the treasure and requests to have his tomb at the water's edge, so sailors can see it and remember it as 'Beowulf's…

If a person does not risk death for their society, they will not be considered a hero; one will be considered as just an ordinary person. However, Beowulf proves that he is not just an ordinary person when he performs brave deeds and is faced with death on numerous accounts for the good of his people. Beowulf faces Grendel, a man-eating monster; Grendel’s mother, a water witch; and the dragon, a hot breath and poisonous creature. When Beowulf faces Grendel’s mother in lines 620-623 “And in an instant she had him down, held helpless. / Squatting with her weight on his stomach, she drew / A dagger, brown with dried blood and prepared / To avenge her only son” he sees death right before him. He keeps fighting because in lines 683-684 Beowulf says “No man but me / Could hope to defeat this monster”. When Beowulf faced the dragon in lines 718-722 “The monster came quickly toward him, / Pouring out fire and smoke, hurrying / To its fate. Flames beat at the iron / Shield, and for a time it held, protected / Beowulf as he’d planned; then it began to melt” Beowulf’s life flashes before his eyes again when he realizing that the shield is not going to hold up, and he will die from the dragon. Beowulf upholds the ideals of the Anglo-Saxon society; courage, loyalty, and honor throughout the entire literature of…

The first of his three major battles was Grendel, a beast who ventured into Heorot (the Danish mead hall) and swept up all the drunken men for a feast. Hearing of this monster Beowulf set sail from Sweden to Denmark to face Grendel. Before the battle he and his men only had one drink to ensure they had their wits about them. Then later in the night they lay waiting for the beast to appear acting as if they were drunk and unconscious. Grendel burst through the large metal doors. The stench of so many of the dead choking the air, looks around and finds his first target, one of Beowulf’s men. He snatches him up, bites his head off and proceeds to drink him like a juicy-juice before consuming him whole. His next victim wouldn’t be taken so easily though. The foolish Grendel grabs at Beowulf who is waiting patiently for the beast. Beowulf then grabs onto Grendel’s arm and proceeds to tear it clean off at the shoulder. Scared Grendel runs with his tail between his legs back to the hellish pit he calls home where he dies before his own mother.…

Beowulf is loosely divided into three parts, each of which centers around Beowulf’s fight with a particular monster: first Grendel, then Grendel’s mother, then the dragon. One can argue that this structure relates to the theme of the epic in that each monster presents a specific moral challenge against which the Anglo-Saxon heroic code can be measured and tested. Beowulf’s fight with Grendel evokes the importance of reputation as a means of expanding one’s existence beyond death. Grendel’s great and terrifying nature ensures that Beowulf will long be celebrated for his heroic conquering of this foe. His subsequent encounter with Grendel’s mother evokes the importance of vengeance. Just as Beowulf exacts revenge upon Grendel for killing Hrothgar’s men, so too must Grendel’s mother seek to purge her grief by slaying her son’s murderer. Beowulf’s final encounter with the dragon evokes a heroic approach to wyrd, or fate. Though he recognizes that his time has come and that he will thus not survive his clash with the dragon, he bravely embraces his duty to protect his people, sacrificing his life to save them.…
