In his book, Big Money: 2.5 Billion Dollars, One Suspicious Vehicle, and a Pimp- on the Trail of the Ultra-Rich Hijacking American Politics, author Kenneth P. Vogel writes on the newly less regulated, and arguably more corrupt relationship between the American political system and big money donors. In this response paper I will address the main questions in relation to the text. One, which Supreme Court decision allowed for the rise in “Big Money’s” influence over the American political system? Two, how did the Supreme Court decision addressed in question one change both the American political landscape and the fundraising techniques used by those involved in political fundraising? And third, how did the Republicans and Democrats each respond in 2012 to “Big Money” in the American political system. I will follow the answers to these questions with a later section in my paper devoted to a personal response to Vogel’s text, as well as connections between his text and broader topic discussed in our Interest Groups class lectures.…

Roberta Robheson’s world is so incredibly cruddy because all the people that exist around her are selfish individuals whose main motivation in life is to better themselves and gain money or prestige. Linda Barry, the author of Cruddy, explores this concept through dark imagery and a disturbing plot that exhibits many characters whose actions are motivated by self-interest and greed which demonstrate Barry’s view that today’s society is rampant with narcissistic individuals.…

The vital theme that John Steinbeck has examined was Greed, Greed as a Destructive force in Kino’s life. Kino seeks to gain wealth and status through the pearl and he transforms from a happy and comfortable father to a brutal criminal, and it is demonstrating that desires and greed are the root of all evil. As well as it destroys the innocence, and it is found in the New Testament in Paul’s first message to Timothy (1 Timothy 6:10) “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.” This was the exact situation that happened to Kino. Kino’s greed led him to behave violently towards his spouse; it also led to his son’s death and it detached…

In the 1800s Mark Twain used the phrase Gilded Age to describe the time of greed and corruption despite the glittering wealth on the surface. Industrialization occurs when a nation's economic system decreases its reliance upon producing goods by hand and increases its reliance upon producing goods by machine. I found in an article online that states:( Mark Twain and Charles Dudley Warner were the first to call the years after the Civil War the "gilded age." Struck by what they saw as the rampant greed and speculative frenzy of the marketplace, and the corruption pervading national politics, they satirized a society whose serious problems, they felt, had been veiled by a thin coating of gold. The label has stuck. Now usually applied to the period extending from the election of Ulysses S. Grant in 1868 to the elevation of reformer Theodore Roosevelt to the presidency at the turn of the twentieth century, the term "Gilded Age" has survived because historians have found a great deal of validity in Twain's and Dudley's characterization of their own time. During those years, America's economy did grow at an extraordinary rate, generating unprecedented levels of wealth. Railroads, and soon telephone lines, stretched across the country, creating new opportunities for entrepreneurs and cheaper goods for consumers.) (http://www.shmoop.com/gilded-age/summary.html)…

The focus area I have chosen for the book Unaccountable, by Marty Makary, is advocacy in economics. It is important for nurses to be aware of healthcare economics, especially since we are the ones at the bedside informing patients, answering their questions, and advocating for their rights. As the American Nurses Association (ANA) states in Provision 3 of their Code of Ethics, nurses must be aware of and act appropriately in all instances of “incompetent, unethical, illegal or impaired practice,” or any actions that place the best interests or rights of the patient in jeopardy (ANA, 2015). I chose to focus on economics because the costs of healthcare constitute one sixth of our economy and is increasingly becoming a burden on families, businesses and government budgets to the extent that it is the leading cause of the nation’s growing debt (Makary, 2012). An…

“The Throwaways” is an article about four young confidential informants who had their lives cut short because they decided to cooperate with law enforcement and help bust drug dealers. Every single informant’s fate led 6 feet underground. Rachel Hoffman was a twenty-three year old girl who had plans to go to culinary school and open a new type of rehabilitation center. Rachel was found dead the next day fifty miles from where the cops were supposed to be tracking her every move. Lebron Gaither testified against a man in court and was then ordered to try and buy narcotics from the same man he had just testified against; he was tortured, shot with a handgun as well as a shotgun, ran over by a car, and then dragged by a chain into the woods. Shelly Hilliard was caught with a half ounce of pot, threatened with prison, and agreed to be an informant. Hilliard’s body was found on fire beneath a…
