Hitler's Government - A politician's Dream or Nightmare?
Did Hitler’s government help or hinder the rise of Nazi politicians? This essay will be about whether the Nazi government affected the rise of prominent Nazi politicians. In this case, the politicians that will be analysed in this essay are Hermann Goering, Joseph Goebbels and Reinhard Heydrich. This is namely because these were prominent politicians who were close to Hitler. To define terms for this essay, “having an impact” on these politicians’ rise to power would mean directly and indirectly pushing either themselves higher up the political ladder or pushing back competition for these places in the top of the government. On 23rd April 1945, Hermann Goering sent a telegram to Hitler. There was a decree in 1941 that should anything befall Hitler, Hermann Goering would become the next leader of Germany. Feeling that Hitler was facing almost certain death from the west, he sent a telegram asking, “Since you are determined to remain at your post in Fortress Berlin, do you agree that I, as your deputy, in accordance with your decree of June 29, 1941, assume immediately the total leadership of the Reich with complete freedom of action at home and abroad? If by 10 p.m. no answer is forthcoming, I shall assume you have been deprived of your freedom of action.” This telegram can be interpreted as an act of treason, an attempt at trying to overthrow Hitler that Goering had been eyeing for Hitler’s position all this while. In the entry of Joseph Goebbels, October 14, 1925, he wrote that "The greater and more towering I make god, the greater and more towering I am myself" . This is to say that by joining Hitler and helping Hitler rise to power, he too would rise in power, his ulterior motive. Reinhard Heydrich was always focused in trying to obtain control over the state police and other forms of security. When this action is analysed, a totalitarian state has no limits on the power of the state police. As long as a threat is claimed to exist, one could always claim that he who controls the state security is required. This would thus ensure that Reinhard Heydrich is kept in power for as long as possible. Also, Heydrich started a brothel called Salon Kitty where he listened in on German dignitaries and foreign diplomats.
