Did King John deserve his reputation
Does Bad King John deserve his reputation?
Oliver Pacey 7LDR
King John was a famous monarch who once ruled Britain. John has the reputation of an unsuccessful, evil and tyrannical king. John came to power when his older brother Richard I died whilst on a crusade in 1199. John was not welcomed to the throne and, according to many historians ruined the country.
Source B; Peter Langtoft’s History of England illustration c.1300 shows a picture of a peaceful scene with a gentle King stroking his pet dogs in the green natural surroundings of England. King John appears kind and gentle which would have been a reassuring picture for the people of that time to see. Peter Langtoft was a priest at the time of John’s reign and this picture shows his full support for the King. This may have been a document that king wanted him to produce so it would have needed the King’s approval. Peter Langtoft may have been afraid to present a bad image of the King as he may have been killed as traitor. Although he may have actually thought this was a true and accurate reflection of the King’s character.
Source I; from a recent history book, states how hard John tried to be a good King despite not being a popular choice at the start of his reign. John’s brother had named John as his heir and this was a very important consideration for the next king at the time. Source I says that John was merciful to helpless people, including women, children and the poor. There must be some evidence of John being good to these people. He may have been a harsh or strong soldier to people in battle but not to the other people. Source I also says that John was a poor soldier because he lost the war in France, but he was in a very difficult position at the time and was just trying to keep the lands his brother won. This source is trying to think about other evidence about the King instead of just saying he was all bad. It is more recent and is trying to be fairer showing a different side to John that

John's reason for not being a holy man (which was a big deal for the time) can be traced to 2 things. 1: Him being a farmer makes his life revolve around the randomness of the weather and the brutality of nature. 2: The corruptness of the religious members of the town. An example is all of the witch accusations that are completely ridiculous and the priest asking the townspeople for money instead of preaching god.…

It is apparent that all was not well in England in the years building up to the Magna Carta in 1215. The barons of the day, not royalty, but the upper crust of society, forced King John to sign the document because it greatly reduced the power he held as the King of England and allowed for the formation of a powerful parliament. In return, the barons took an oath of loyalty to King John under the agreement that all abide by it. The Magna Carta became the basis for English citizen's rights and it is evidence that the people of England faced many political, social, economic, and ethnic tensions with King John and his empire.…

He is a device used by Shakespeare to create tension and drama throughout the play. He is not the most complex villain among Shakespeare’s villainous characters, however he has a purpose. The thinness of his character teaches us about the knowledge people have of him in society: he is just seen as a ‘bastard’ and people don’t even want to be associated with him so don’t bother to learn anything about him. The fact that we don’t learn much about Don John also reminds us that the play isn’t meant to be a tragedy; it is supposed to teach us about the misunderstandings. It isn’t really supposed to analyse evil at all.…

John was always open and honest with his words with a no-holds-barred vocabulary, but he would always speak with motivation and try to empower others. Good yet daring people like John are rare to come across. I don’t know any other man who would put others’ lives before their own. John noticed after he was banished that for once in his life he was alone but he wasn’t completely alone. His group to him, sad to say, were seen as somewhat useless and pathetic, he realized he needed to take responsibility and doesn’t abandon them. Hopefully another kind-hearted person like John will come along. One who doesn’t abandon others in times…

When he was faced with the decision- sign a false confession and save his own life to care for his family or allow himself to be executed, his decision to choose self-sacrifice allows him to both recover the sense of goodness that he lost when he committed with adultery with Abigail and also to rise above the tragedy of politics. However, by sacrificing himself, he left behind his family and everything he had worked toward. John had always seemed pretentious and extremely self-righteous to me, and I believe that is how he wanted to be known/remembered. The dramatics with signing the paper, but then ripping it? “Let me keep my name!” You still signed the paper and slept with Abigail, John, your name is already tarnished. Nobody in Salem is going to think of him as a “hero” because, for me, its low that John would rather be hanged and leave his family than be embarrassed and have his name hanging on the church door (which he claims to disagree with…

After coming to terms and understanding the death of his father, John constructed a quite beautiful, yet short and sweet stanza to sum up what he would to growing up as a man in the village of Salem and how he will live life. It says, “One may fool the hearts of many yet not get pass through to me, and although I might be condemned I must look where there is plea, and help those around to view through the lens I may look through, and do my best to do good whenever I may come by to you.” Although he directed his feelings towards myself and Rebecca, the actions of those words resonate throughout our village and the good work he does. John stood for respect, goodwill, and his undeniable selflessness. And although he had made mistakes along the way, he understood they were unjust but repented and did his best to make it right. John could always be seen around the corner trying to help out either fixing Mr. Jacobs wagon, or even carrying the heavy bags of wheat into the home of the…
