Muhammad Ali got a letter that changed his life and in many ways the relationship between sports and politics. At the time the U.S. government held an annual draft to fill the ranks of the armed forces . Ali was aware of this, and for months had been trying to have himself classified as a “conscientious objector.” Ali felt his beliefs in Islam, specifically his membership in the American Black Muslim movement ( which he had joined in 1964), prohibited him from fighting in a war. from talents and skills of the black athlete. Rhoden’s historical narrative also identifies as what he calls the jockey syndrome, where he uses the exceptional story of Isaac Murphy who was at one point the most prominent and wealthiest black jockey during the 19th century. During Murphy’s brilliant career, he won three Kentucky Derby races and he even employed a White valet during the horse racing season. Murphy earned between $15,000 and $20,000 dollars per year during the height of his career. However, all was not always good with Murphy and his career.…

After Muhammad Ali claimed that he was not going to be inducted into the United States Army because he “...ain’t got no quarrel with them Vietcong”, he was convicted of draft evasion, fined $10,000 and sentenced to five years in prison. Muhammad Ali gained his fighting licence back in 1970 and in 1971 and the conviction was appealed. His actions and bravery gave people courage to fight for what they believed in, which lead to people questioning the drafting process and helped start the anti-slavery movement. Muhammad Ali is considered by many to be one of the greatest boxers of all time. As a result, the planned it among themselves that for the narrator to present his graduation speech he had to fight the battle royal blindfolded. The fighting in the boxing ring was symbolic to the whites holding black's captive in the dark. Additionally, the money being thrown on the ground was symbolic to the blacks position in…

There are crucial parts throughout the novel that Hosseini wanted us at readers to visualize as we read. Three ironic moments illustrated in the novel that I picked was when Baba told Amir “Now, no matter what the mullah teaches, theres is only one sin, only one. And that is theft” (16). The second irony is Baba tells Amir that there is one better than a Pashtun by your side. “We may be hardheaded and I know we’re far too proud, but, in the hour of need, believe me that there’s no one you’d rather have at your side than a Pashtun” (140). The last irony I found unique is the lip scar Amir gets later on in his life that is the same as Hassan’s lip when he was little.Hosseini utilizes irony as a part of his book to give another push to the story. His ironic moments in the novel helps shape our understanding of the story giving us a perspective on both sides of a problem. .…
