Did Slavery Really Cause The Civil War?
I had originally thought that the main cause of the Civil War was slavery; however, after my research I now believe the true cause of the Civil War is much more complex. I mostly agree with agree with Holt and his theory that the political crisis caused the Civil War. While reading Holt’s essay I became convinced that slavery alone couldn’t have caused the Civil War because the tension over slavery had existed for so long before the Civil War. It was the destruction of the previous two party system that left the South feeling politically stranded which lead to the Civil War. This viewpoint was supported by my research on Jefferson Davis for the meeting of the minds. Davis felt that the South was losing faith in the political system because

Slavery a very important issue that cause a lot of damage in order to get a good solution. Dr. Ed Ayers ideas were that the Civil War was not caused by slavery at all. It was caused by misunderstandings, confusions, and miscalculations of the nation as a whole. He states that the fundamentalists gave the argument of the war starting due to the inevitable conflict between slavery and free labor, while the revisionists emphasize the small events and political structures, rather than just slavery triggering the start of the Civil War. The reasoning that Dr. Ayers argues about the question “what caused the civil war” is that the questions that should be asked to answer this question are a combination of the views of the fundamentalists and the revisionists. His ideas show slavery being an obstacle to the…

Slavery was a major cause for the civil war, whether it was recognized at the beginning as a central cause or not. “Two nations- The United States of America (shorn of seven states in the Deep South) and the Confederate States of America- each blamed the other for the breakup of the Union” (16.1). At the split of the Union and the secession of Confederate states, the war broke out. At the beginning it was considered that “This was not yet a war for or by black people” (16.1.1). But to consider what the Confederates stood for and believed it is hard to ignore the fact that slavery was a central cause from the beginning.…

Between 1848 and 1861 there were many issues the northern and southern states of America were disagreeing on. These disagreements eventually led to the Civil War. The common myth of the Civil war is that it was a war fought over the issue of slavery. So if slavery was not the reason for the war, what was? The war was fought to preserve the union, to keep the United States as one. Understanding the reasons for the south's secession and the war requires the examination of the opposing views of the North and the South, the Dred Scott Decision, the Fugitive State Law, and the election of Abraham Lincoln.…

Slavery contributed to Civil War in numerous ways. The cotton industry was booming in the South, and was in need for vast amounts of Labor. The North and the South would come to strong disagreements over slavery. The main reason that slavery contributed to the civil war were that the South’s economy depended on free Labor, and the North had no need for free labor because their industrialized economy provided stability for wage labor, so the north wanted to abolish slavery.…

Slavery is what I believe caused the Civil War for many reasons. One reason why I think slavery was a major issue in the 1860s is because it divided the country into half free, and half slave. " A house divided against itself cannot stand [Doc F]." This quote from Abraham Lincoln shows how other people thought about the country, and slavery. Another reason why slavery caused the Civil War is because if the north kept its freedom and the south kept its slaves then the country is going to fall apart, not from the outside but from the inside. " I believe this government cannot endure, permanently, half slave and half free [Doc F]." Another quote from Abraham Lincoln. There is no way that a country can stand half and half, it would be logical to think that someday one will take over the other. Since Abraham Lincoln was nominated to be President, South got unhappy, quick. South Carolina threatened to secede and many people led revolts against slavery. This is what sparked America to go to war.…

In 1861, a world changing event began- the Civil War. The war’s effects and consequences were life-shaking and they consisted of death and reconstruction. It is a very debatable topic on whether the North or the South were the aggressors in starting the war. The causes of the Civil War include slavery and everything that came along with it, popular sovereignty, and the secession of the South. These incidents, slavery, popular sovereignty, and the South’s secession are the most significant reasons that the Civil War began and all prove that the South was the true aggressor.…

So many major events from the time between 1848 and 1861, lead up to the civil war between the Union and the Confederacy. “Historians have identified at least four main causes of the conflict between the North and the South: (1) slavery, as a growing moral issue in the North, versus its defense and expansion in the South; (2) constitutional disputes over the nature of the federal Union and states’ rights; (3) economic differences between the industrializing North and the agricultural South over such issues as tariffs, banking, and internal improvements; (4) political blunders and extremism on both sides, which some historians conclude resulting in an unnecessary war” (Newmon 247). Though these are logical explanation, to why the civil war began, I believe that believe that because of agitation over slavery, national parties in crisis, extremist and violence, constitutional issues, and road to secession ultimately led to the outbreak between the North and the South.…

Slavery, “the practice or system of owning slaves” and slave define as “a person who is the legal property of another and is forced to obey them”. That was the mindset of most white people in America during this time and era. This was roughly the 1800’s. The white men thought it was okay to own another human being as long as their skin color was different from theirs. You could buy or sell any slave you had.…

If asked, most people would blame as the cause of the civil war the issue of slavery. This is understandable; many people in the U.S. at the time were against slavery, going to far as to help runaway slaves escape to the free north. But, while slavery at face value was a major factor, international politics and economics played a major role. Several factors, including the election of Lincoln, the raid on Harper 's Ferry, the Dred Scott decision, and, most importantly, the fugitive slave law, contributed to the growing rift between the North and South and, eventually, the Civil War.…
