The dodgy barbeque:
The guests at the party will have got food poisoning from the salmonella in the uncooked burgers. The reason they got food poisoning is because the inside of the burgers weren’t cooked enough or properly so the bacteria didn’t get killed inside the burgers. The burgers would have you be cooked at above 170 degrees Celsius, and as the heat didn’t kill the bacteria, it entered the body. As Chloe’s dad only cooked the burgers on a high hear for a very short amount of time, he burnt the outside without heating the inside of the beef burgers.
Just touching an uncooked burger and then putting your fingers in your mouth can potentially give you food poisoning so a couple of bites of an uncooked burger would be enough to ensure a few bad stomachs the next day.
Bacteria can get into your body in many ways; the first one is Droplet infection so when you cough, sneeze or talk you expel tiny droplets full of pathogens from your breathing system and then other people breathe that in. The second is Direct Contact which means that some diseases are spread by direct contact of the skin. The third is through contaminated food and drink so when you eat raw or undercooked food or you drink water containing sewage can spread disease for example diarrhoea and food poisoning (salmonella). The fourth is being infected by bacteria through any animal or insect bite for example malaria is spread by a mosquito that contains the malaria virus biting you.
The way that the guests were infected at the party was infected food and this was because the salmonella has not been killed by the heat of the cooking.
The body has a lot of defences to ensure that bacteria do not enter our body. The skin is the first barrier to stop foreign cells from getting into the body. The skin is made up of lots of skin cells stuck together . The skin doesn’t just stop bacteria from getting in and it is also to keep everything inside from getting out.
Secondly is the mouth. It secretes cell dissolving enzymes this kills any bad bacteria on food but this doesn’t always work.
A final example is a large white blood cell which preforms the process of phagocytosis. In the process of phagocytosis the white blood cell or in the family of cells what does this job, It would be called a phagocytic cell is attracted to the virus or bacteria by chemical attractant. When the cell is found it is surrounded by normal white blood cells that release antibodies that slowly kill the bacteria and then its devoured by the phagocytic cell.

The bacteria must overcome both the primary and secondary response’s; Primary being stomach acid, secondary being white blood cells.
How do bacteria reproduce in the digestive system?
Bacteria reproduce in the body by dividing. This is when one cell splits to make 2, 2 split to make 4 and 4 split to make 8 cells. This process goes on and on and on until the harmful bacteria is exterminated by enzymes or while blood cells.
How fast doesit reproduce?
Salmonella reproduces one every 20 minutes. The is incredibly fast is 200,000 bacteria got into the body in the first place about 1,800,000 would have been produces in the body in just three hours.
What can the body do to fight the food poisoning?
The body recognises the food poisoning as something harmful and then the white blood cells produce antibodies. The antibodies cling onto the bacterium and slowly kill it. If it is the first time that the person has had food poisoning it will take longer for the illness to leave the system. As the body wont recognise the bug and will take longer to produce antibodies. Once had the bacteria has been killed the white blood cells will save the bacterium’s “i.d” so they will be able to produce the correct antibodies quickly.
